Popular TV presenter departs high-profile hosting role after five years: ‘This was always a privilege’

Jenny-May Clarkson, a well-known television host in New Zealand, has announced she’s stepping down from her position as co-host of TVNZ’s Breakfast show.

She has been the host of the popular morning show since 2020, working alongside Chris Chang. She is 51 years old.

After twenty years with TVNZ, Hayley Clarkson will host her last episode of Breakfast on November 21st, according to the New Zealand Herald.

The network revealed the search for Clarkson’s replacement is now underway.

Reflecting on the role, Clarkson said in a statement her time on Breakfast had been a ‘privilege’.

‘I’m grateful to our audience who have welcomed me into their homes each morning,’ she said.

I’ve truly valued the opportunity to contribute to broadcasting that cares – to share diverse perspectives and approach important conversations with understanding, modesty, and respect.

I’ve always considered this an honor, not something I was entitled to. I’m leaving with sincere thanks, proud of all we’ve accomplished as a team, and grateful for the viewers who have supported us for the last six years.

Nadia Tolich, a leader at TVNZ, praised the departing host for her kind and understanding nature.

According to Tolich, Jenny-May is a gifted broadcaster who excels at connecting with viewers and authentically portraying emotion, particularly when covering difficult events and showing compassion for affected communities, as demonstrated by TVNZ’s acclaimed coverage of Cyclone Gabrielle.

She has presented live news and breaking reports, led the television coverage of the Commonwealth Games, and was instrumental in bringing netball back to free-to-air television.

New Zealanders will definitely feel her absence from the Breakfast show each morning, and we’re all grateful for the hard work she put into the job.

Many people online expressed similar feelings, and one Facebook user wrote, ‘Wishing you all the best in whatever comes next.’

We’re really going to miss you! It was always a pleasure seeing you in the mornings – you always brightened my day with a smile or a laugh.

Someone else wrote, “I’m so sad to see you go and will miss your cheerful presence each morning. I wish you all the best in your future adventures with your family.”

Someone else chimed in, saying they were really sorry to hear about Jenny-May and wished her all the best. They described her as a bright and cheerful person who would be greatly missed.

Before becoming known as a broadcaster, Clarkson was a famous athlete in New Zealand, playing on the national netball team called the Silver Ferns.

She first played for the Silver Ferns when she was 23, in 1997, and represented the team in 26 test matches over six years.

Clarkson also represented her country in touch rugby, winning a silver medal at the 1999 World Cup.

After retiring from competitive sport, Clarkson joined TVNZ in 2005 as a netball commentator.

In 2019, she became a news presenter on Breakfast, before stepping up as co-presenter in 2020.

Clarkson is a long-time presenter on the network and has made history as the first Māori woman to co-host Breakfast.
