Popular punk band are forced to cancel their 2024 Australian tour as they give heartbreaking health update about their frontman
As a dedicated Sum 41 fan since their debut album All Killer No Filler, I can hardly contain my disappointment at the cancellation of their Australian tour due to Deryck Whibley’s health issues. It feels like fate has played a cruel trick on us Aussie fans, who have waited years for this moment – a chance to witness our beloved Canadian punkers live before they retire.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, the Canadian punk rock band Sum 41 has regretfully had to call off their upcoming Australian tour, mere hours prior to their initial performance in Australia.
The group behind “In Too Deep” was set to perform at the upcoming Good Things festival, along with a series of additional shows, which would have marked their last-ever tour in Australia.
Unfortunately, just before their scheduled performance at Brisbane’s Fortitude Music Hall on a Wednesday, it was disclosed that the concert had to be cancelled due to lead vocalist Deryck Whibley contracting pneumonia.
In a heartfelt announcement through social media, the band shared the unfortunate news that Deryck is undergoing top-tier medical treatment, unfortunately rendering him unable to grace the stage for performances at this time.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I was thrilled when Grandson, our replacement act, decided to make amends by gracing us with a spectacular, complimentary performance at the vibrant Brisbane venue The Outpost. To add an extra dash of excitement, Sum 41’s drummer, Frank Zummo, treated us to a pulsating DJ set that had everyone dancing and grooving! It was an unforgettable night filled with great music and camaraderie.
The band has announced that, because of Deryck’s health issues, they will no longer be performing at the Good Things festival on Friday and will cancel all their upcoming shows in Australia as well.
In simpler terms, “The band shared on Facebook that unfortunately, their planned tour of Australia in 2024 won’t happen.
We couldn’t contain our enthusiasm for the tour taking place from December 4 – December 12, as we looked forward to reconnecting with our Australian fans again.
The band explained that, based on the recommendations from medical experts, it wasn’t suitable for Deryck to perform live at that time.
Given our current location and with numerous Australian medical professionals guiding us, it’s evident that Deryck’s health condition is too severe for him to carry out his duties.
‘We understand and appreciate your disappointment—we’re gutted too.’
Encouraged by the organizers, Good Things ticket holders were advised to attend the music festival anyway and appreciate the other performances, as they wouldn’t be present.
‘The good news is the Good Things festival is still going ahead in Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane this weekend with an incredible lineup of local and international acts,’ they continued.
‘We can’t be there, but get along for us and have the best time.’
The post was met with a flurry of comments from disappointed-yet-empathetic fans.
One person commented, “It’s crystal clear! However, it’s incredibly disheartening for those of us living at the far end of the earth to realize that not many punk bands come our way.
I hope Deryck gets well soon! Many people think it would be wonderful if we could stream a live show from him before he wraps things up.
Someone else added: ‘I’m completely devastated because the main reason I wanted to attend your concerts was before you retired. Get well soon, Deryck. Australian fans are with you all the way.’
Sum 41’s sideshows in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney have all been cancelled.
The “The Good Things Festival” with acts like Korn, The Violent Femmes, and Mastodon in the roster, remains scheduled. It starts at Melbourne’s Flemington Racecourse on Friday, 6th of December.
On the 7th of December (Saturday), it will proceed to Centennial Park in Sydney, followed by a visit to Brisbane Showgrounds on the 8th of December (Sunday).
Festival organisers said in a statement that Deryck’s health was the top priority.
Following the advice and supervision of medical professionals in Australia, it’s been determined that Deryck Whibley from Sum 41 isn’t well enough to put on a performance. This was the essence of the statement made.
41 regrets deeply that they cannot put on a show for you all, and we empathize completely with your feelings of letdown.
Our primary concern is Deryck’s health and overall wellness. We invite you to share your positive thoughts and wishes with him as he embarks on his journey towards recovery.
41 Sum was initially established in Ajax, Ontario, back in 1996, under the original moniker of Kaspir, which later got changed.
Presently, the band comprises singer/guitarist Deryck (who was married to Avril Lavigne between 2006 and 2010), guitarist Dave Baksh, versatile musician Tom Thacker, bassist Jason McCaslin, and drummer Frank.
The band gained widespread recognition after the launch of their 2001 hit single “Fat Lip,” which appeared on their first album titled “All Killer No Filler.” Eventually, this song peaked at the top spot on the Billboard US Alternative Airplay chart.
As a lifestyle aficionado, I’m always on the lookout for fresh tunes, and one band that never disappoints is Sum 41. Since we last chatted, they’ve dropped six fantastic albums! Their latest masterpiece, Order in Decline, hit the charts in 2019. It’s a must-listen if you’re into high-energy punk rock with a twist of pop sensibility.
In 2012, the band was selected as a nominee for the Grammy Award in the category of Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance, thanks to their effort on the song “Blood in My Eyes”. However, it was the Foo Fighters who took home the award that year.
