Popeye is a cold-blooded killer in the teaser trailer for Popeye the Slayer Man

As someone who grew up with a diet of spinach and dreams of sailing the seven seas, the thought of Popeye the Sailor Man turning into a slasher is a bitter pill to swallow! I mean, who would have thought that the beloved character we all know for his strength from eating spinach could turn out to be a monster?

You’ve likely never encountered Popeye the Sailor in such a chilling manner. Leveraging the current fad of reimagining public domain characters as terrifying slasher figures, Jeff Miller is set to release his horror film named Popeye: The Slayer, hitting cinemas in 2025.

The movie presents a different origin story for the famed sailor, and here’s an interesting twist: He’s turned into a killer. This is due to the fact that the excessive amounts of spinach he’s known for eating have become tainted.

In the preview, an open tin can emitting a faint, eerie luminescence is noticeable, along with a larger and grotesque portrayal of the main character known as the “slayer.” It seems that this film will not hesitate to display graphic violence. The sneak peek offers glimpses into several scenes, such as Popeye brutally crushing one character’s skull and another unflinchingly stepping onto a nail. In a chilling twist, Popeye utters his signature phrase, “I am what I am,” but this time, he uses it to confirm that he has become a monster.

Miller expresses his eagerness for spectators to watch the movie, which was shot in New York State. The unique aspect that caught his attention is the use of actual effects for the gore, instead of digital ones. As of now, Popeye the Slayer Man is being marketed to potential buyers, so its release location remains unknown at this time.

In this movie, you’ll find Elena Juliano, Sean Michael Conway, Mabel Thomas, Marie-Louise Boisnier, Jeff Thomas, Angela Relucio, Sarah Nicklin, and Steven McCormack among the cast members. The main character, Popeye, is portrayed by Jason Stephens.

Robert Michael Ryan, known as the “Ouija Witch,” serves as director for a screenplay written by John Doolan (“Remains”). In addition to this, Miller, Cuyle Carvin, and Ryan collaborated on the story’s development. This co-production is brought to you by Salem House Films, Millman Productions, Ron Lee Productions, and Otsego Media.

Popeye, the reimagined warrior character, harmonizes seamlessly with contemporary dark retellings of iconic childhood figures, such as Winnie the Pooh in “Blood and Honey” and Steamboat Willie’s reinvention in “Mouse Trap”. The masterminds behind “Blood and Honey” are developing a “Twisted Childhood Universe”, encompassing films exploring darker versions of Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Bambi, and others.

Although Popeye the Slayer Man doesn’t belong to that particular universe, it seems to be adhering to the current trend. Meanwhile, Lionsgate will introduce its chilling adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid this December. So if you enjoy seeing your childhood characters reimagined, there are numerous movies in the pipeline following a similar approach.
