Lily Collins, known for her role in *Emily in Paris*, will still star in the upcoming *Polly Pocket* movie, even though director Lena Dunham has left the project. After the success of *Barbie*, directed by Greta Gerwig, Mattel Studios announced another film based on a classic toy, with Collins playing the title character, Polly.
After Lena Dunham stepped down as director, Deadline reports that Zoey Deutch remains cast in the main role. Deutch’s production company, Case Study Films, will work with Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine on the project.
Jordan Weiss and Dan Brier are writing the screenplay. The project aims to build on the huge success of the 2023 *Barbie* movie, which starred Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, earned $1.44 billion globally, and was nominated for eight Oscars.

Polly Pocket first appeared in 1989 and featured a small doll housed inside a compact. When opened, the compact revealed a tiny playset or house for the doll.
Details about the new Polly Pocket movie are still limited, but Deadline has reported it will tell the story of a young girl who becomes friends with a tiny woman.

When her role in the movie was first announced in 2021, Collins expressed her excitement about working with the team. She said it had been a pleasure helping to reimagine Polly for a new generation in a fun and modern way, alongside Robbie, Lena, Mattel, and MGM.
Growing up, I absolutely loved Polly Pocket, so working on a movie based on them is a dream come true. I’m so excited to share these miniature toys with a wider audience on the big screen!

Lena Dunham recently explained to *The New Yorker* why she left the *Polly Pocket* movie project. She said she had written a script for it and spent three years developing the idea, but ultimately decided not to move forward.
Lena Dunham complimented Greta Gerwig’s *Barbie*, saying it was uniquely and wonderfully Gerwig’s vision. This inspired Dunham to realize her next film needs to be intensely personal – something only she could create. She admitted she felt others could have successfully directed *Polly Pocket*, but her next project needs to be distinctly her own.
