The Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket has been popular for over a year, with around 16 different sets released (including special promotions). It’s now entering its second year of offering themed series. The game has seen many improvements and with various ways to play and trade, it’s in a great place. If you’re looking for advice on which cards to collect in the new Paldean Wonders set, we can help!
Bellibolt ex
Pack Points – 500
Because powerful decks are successfully using Bellibolt ex, it’s not surprising that new ex cards often stand out when a new set is released. In the Paldean Wonders set, Bellibolt ex is making a big impact, as it can be set up quickly and deal a substantial 140 damage.
Beliibolt ex decks work best with cards that help you quickly find and play key pieces, letting you evolve Tadbulb into Beliibolt ex and reliably deal 140 damage each turn.
The main drawback is the cost – 500 pack points. If you don’t get one randomly, it could take a while to earn enough points to purchase it.
Electric Generator
Pack Points – 70
Electric Generator is a key card for decks focused on Electric-type Pokémon. It speeds up your gameplay, letting you play more cards each turn. Originally from the Pokémon Trading Card Game, it was updated for Pocket and first appeared in the Scarlet & Violet expansion.
Flip a coin. If it lands on heads, move one Lightning Energy card from your Energy Zone and attach it to one of your Benched Lightning Pokémon.
This deck is very straightforward, and the special cards can be really powerful, particularly with Bellibolt ex being a popular choice right now. Best of all, it’s affordable – if you don’t get the cards you need from booster packs, you can get all four for just 140 reward points.
Chien-Pao ex
Pack Points – 500
Chien-Pao ex is a great Pokémon to begin with in any deck. It’s a powerful basic Pokémon you can start using right away. It can do a little damage with its first attack, or, if you have enough Water Energy, it can deal a massive 130 damage to any of your opponent’s Pokémon. The trade-off is you have to discard all the Water Energy attached to Chien-Pao ex after using that stronger attack.
A key advantage of Chien-Pao ex is its low Retreat Cost of just one. Certain decks can also take advantage of the Inflatable Boat Pokémon Tool, which reduces the Retreat Cost of any Water-type Pokémon by one.
Gholdengo ex
Pack Points – 500
I was thrilled to see Gholdengo ex – a Pokémon I really like, similar to String Cheese – become available in Pocket, and it’s quickly become a popular choice in many different levels of competitive play. Its ability, called Spending Rush, is straightforward: it only requires one energy to activate.
For each Steel Energy attached to this Pokémon, your opponent randomly selects one of their Pokémon. That selected Pokémon then receives 40 damage.
Gholdengo ex works well with the Metal Core Barrier card, which can reduce damage taken by 50 for a single turn. You can find Metal Core Barrier in Fantastical Parade booster packs.
Meowscarada ex
Pack Points – 500
Pokémon ex cards are still the most powerful, and now a starter Pokémon is joining their ranks. You’ll need to evolve Sprigatito into Floragato, and then into Meowscarada, but the final form is incredibly strong.
By spending one Grass Energy, you can select a Pokémon from your opponent’s Active or Bench and deal 70 damage to it at the end of their next turn. Additionally, the Solar Beam attack, which costs two Grass Energy and deals 80 damage, is a solid option.
This strategy focuses on eliminating weaker Pokémon from your opponent’s bench, a common tactic in many games. While the smaller bench size in the Trading Card Game makes it less impactful than in the physical game, a Pokémon with 160 HP is quite durable and should allow you enough time to defeat three opponents and win.
Armarouge ex
Pack Points – 500
Let’s look at a former Pokémon ex with a handy ability. Armarouge has the Armor ability, which reduces damage from all attacks by 30. This means, unless it’s facing a Pokémon that’s strong against Fire (like Water-types), Armarouge can really control the game. Many Pokémon in the TCG Pocket meta need time to get ready and deal significant damage, and Armarouge doesn’t have that weakness.
This strategy involves using Boss’ Orders to bring in your opponent’s weaker Pokémon, then consistently dealing 120 damage with Armarouge’s Armor Cannon. Flame Patch is extremely helpful for quickly recharging Armarouge and getting other Pokémon onto your bench, while Rocky Helmet can provide extra damage whenever your Pokémon is attacked, increasing your team’s overall defense.
Arven
Pack Points – 70
Arven in the game isn’t quite as powerful as his trading card game version – that one lets you specifically find both an item and a tool card. However, this version is still reliable. When you use Arven in the game, it’s like flipping a coin: heads gets you a random item card, and tails gets you a random Pokémon Tool card.
If you design your deck well, this card is a real benefit. It lets you consistently get the cards you need, eliminating frustrating luck-based failures. Including two copies is especially helpful if your deck uses both types of items, and its cost of 70 pack points makes it quite accessible.
Skeledirge
Pack Points – 150
Skeledirge is a powerful card that shouldn’t be underestimated. While other Pokémon ex might be more commonly used, Skeledirge, as a fully evolved starter Pokémon, boasts a strong and effective ability.
Once per turn, you can remove one fire energy from this card to power up your fire Pokémon’s attacks, increasing their damage to the opponent’s active Pokémon by 50. Because its Heat Crash attack only requires two energy for 70 damage, you can effectively boost that attack to 120 damage with three energy.
As a fan, I’m really excited about Flame Patch! It lets you boost this attack while taking hits – you’ve got 150 HP to work with, which is great. Just be aware, like with most of the powerful ex cards, you’ll need to start with Fuecoco and evolve it all the way up to Skeledirge. Rare Candies can speed things up if you’re impatient, and honestly, a lot of decks in TCG Pocket skip evolving to Crocalor altogether – they go straight from Fuecoco to Skeledirge!
Pawmot
Pack Points – 100
Pawmot is an easy-to-play deck that utilizes the powerful lightning-type cards introduced in the Paldean Wonders set of TCG Pocket.
To maximize its potential, you’ll need to evolve Pawmi into Pawmo and then Pawmot, or use a Rare Candy to speed things up. Once evolved, it can consistently deal 100 lightning damage for just two energy, making it a very efficient attack. Plus, it’s easy to recharge its energy, allowing it to control the pace of early battles and even finish opponents off.
Baxcalibur
Pack Points – 150
Baxcalibur is a powerful new Pokémon, but it costs three energy to retreat. However, it can inflict significant damage and even secure victories. Once per turn, Baxcalibur’s ability lets you move a water energy from your energy storage and attach it to your active water Pokémon.
This card is useful as a consistent setup piece on your bench, helping you prepare for each game. You can also use Water energy with Baxcalibur, allowing it to use its powerful Buster Tail attack for 90 damage with only three energy.
The Paldean Wonders set for Pokémon TCG Pocket offers a ton of possibilities for any deck you want to build. A good approach is to start with some strong cards you pull from packs, then use Pack Points to find the final pieces you need to complete your strategy.
