A new demo is available for Rose Gold NDS, a fan-made Pokémon ROM hack shared on Reddit by BlewXwReid. Largely created by one person, this ambitious project features a completely new story, unique bosses, and Pokémon from all nine generations. It’s built on the Pokémon HeartGold base game but includes visual improvements and gameplay enhancements for a better experience.

Many fan-made Pokémon games build on existing titles by adding new locations or changing what’s already there. However, Rose Gold is different. It features a completely original story and a brand-new region to discover, and you can play through it with almost any Pokémon you like.
With a visual style reminiscent of classic Pokémon games on the DS, Pokémon Rose Gold includes several subtle improvements. Features like shifting camera angles and weather effects aim to enhance the gameplay experience while preserving the beloved, nostalgic look of the original games.
Although it doesn’t have the same visual impact as a complete overhaul in a game engine like Unreal, Rose Gold is a great choice for players who miss the classic, more straightforward Pokémon games.

The demo takes place several years after the stories of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. You’ll play as either the male or female protagonist and explore the new Tohjo region, battling tougher opponents and discovering new legendary Pokémon. Even the limited areas available in the demo demonstrate the game’s diverse environments and interesting features.
Many beloved features from the original Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, such as having Pokémon follow you, are back! The game also includes helpful improvements like unlimited use of TMs, HMs that can be removed from Pokémon, and the ability to use your PC from anywhere.
Although the Pokémon Rose Gold project is still early in development, it’s already a standout ROM hack. The free demo offers around 1.5 to 2 hours of gameplay, and it’s definitely worth trying out.
