Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team has the best personality quiz

As someone who grew up with a Game Boy Advance and a deep affection for the enchanting world of Pokémon, I can’t help but feel a rush of nostalgia at the arrival of “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team” on Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack. The game is more than just a trip down memory lane; it’s a time capsule that holds a piece of my childhood, and one particular feature stands out above the rest – the official Pokémon personality quiz!

As a dedicated Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscriber, I’m thrilled to discover that a fantastic game is joining our collection this Friday: “Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team”. Originally released in the U.S. for the Game Boy Advance back in 2006, this game stands out as it kick-started a unique spinoff series that lets you embody your favorite Pokémon characters. For me, what made it truly special was the official Pokémon personality quiz it offered!

Typically, Pokémon games launched before Mystery Dungeon series primarily revolved around accumulating and combating monsters. However, Red Rescue Team made me ponder about the Pokémon I’d be if given the chance. Instead of choosing a creature to play as, this game presents you with a short personality quiz that determines which Pokémon aligns best with your real-life preferences.

I’m quite intrigued by this quick little quiz that promises to be done in just a few minutes of my time. It seems there are some straightforward yes-or-no questions about my self-perception, such as whether I consider myself cool or not, and I can appreciate the honesty it demands. However, what catches my attention is the peculiarity of some questions; for instance, one asks if I’ve ever stumbled upon a predicament trap, and another presents a hypothetical situation where I must decide how to act if I find a misplaced wallet.

If your responses were a bit humorous or unconventional, you could end up as the cheerful water-creature Squirtle. If your answers showed inconsistency and the quiz found you peculiar, the game would choose Meowth for you. If it perceived your demeanor as tranquil, you’d receive Mudkip.

The personality quiz might become frustrating if your intention was simply to role-play your preferred Pokémon character. (Early in the game, I found myself wanting to alter my character’s name, so I had to restart my progress. I believe I retook the test a dozen times just to play as Cyndaquil once more.) Furthermore, it poses a question about one’s gender at the end, which seems rather nonsensical given that anyone can appreciate any type of Pokémon.

Despite not being overly enthusiastic about it, I enjoyed the creative touch of the quiz. Growing up, I’ve taken numerous personality tests from magazines and online platforms such as BuzzFeed. I wasn’t deeply into Harry Potter, so I didn’t get too excited about determining my house on sites like Pottermore. However, I was quick to participate in finding out which Pokémon I would be identified as.

With the release of the game on Nintendo Switch this upcoming Friday, I can’t wait to re-engage after such a long time has passed and discover which Pokémon character I’ll embody this time around.
