Pokémon Leaks Officially Reveal Cut Content From Scarlet & Violet

A recent data leak revealed that Game Freak had previously explored the idea of creating Dragon-type versions of Magikarp and Gyarados.

Since the Gold and Silver games, Pokémon has regularly introduced regional variations and new evolutions of existing Pokémon. Later games, like those featuring Alolan and Galarian forms, have really emphasized this approach. It allows developers to reimagine classic Pokémon designs and give fresh attention to Pokémon lines that haven’t been featured in a while, appealing to longtime fans.

Dragon-Type Magikarp & Gyarados Discovered In Gen 9 Leak

Over time, many unused designs from Pokémon game development have surfaced. Recently, a user on Twitter/X named IcyBoi33 discovered data from Pokémon Scarlet & Violet that shows plans for Dragon-type versions of Magikarp and Gyarados, which were ultimately cut from the game.

We haven’t seen any new designs for Magikarp and Gyarados yet, and it’s unclear if they even exist. The design files haven’t been found, so they might not have been finished or approved. Unless something is leaked from Game Freak, we might not see them. However, Game Freak could still decide to use these designs in a future game, like the upcoming Winds & Waves.

Why Did Game Freak Scrap The Dragon-Type Magikarp & Gyarados?

So, Pokémon Scarlet and Violet threw a curveball with these new versions of old Pokémon – like, what if they’d evolved differently way back when, or in the future? It’s cool seeing Pokémon like Tentacool get a fresh look, but honestly, it’s kinda weird that some Pokémon got these new forms and others, like Magikarp and Gyarados, didn’t. I’m still trying to figure out the reasoning behind that!

If Magikarp became a Dragon-type Pokémon, it might lose its reputation for being weak, since Dragon-types are resistant to many attacks. Also, Gyarados already got a powerful upgrade with its Mega Evolution in previous games, so giving it another one might have seemed unnecessary.

Perhaps Magikarp and Gyarados are so well-known that they don’t need new forms. It was a better idea to create regional versions of Pokémon like Tentacool and a new evolution for Primeape, to highlight older Pokémon that people don’t often use. If these designs appear in Pokémon Winds & Waves, they’re sure to be powerful in battles.
