Pokémon GO 9th Anniversary Event debuts Shiny Gimmighoul

Get ready for some Pokémon GO birthday celebrations.

How does the time fly by? Pokémon GO is marking its 9th anniversary with a special occasion designed to let Trainers celebrate the game once more. Typically, we see a variety of Pokémon dressed up for the anniversary, and this year is no exception – there are even some new characters from last year’s celebration.

Among them, we’re introducing the very first costumed Gimmighoul, and yes, it can be shimmery too! This marks the dazzling debut of this incredibly elusive Pokémon, making it an exhilarating experience for trainers.

Moreover, you’ll find a variety of additional perks, such as an impressive increase in the likelihood of encountering Lucky Friends and Lucky Pokémon.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 9th Anniversary Party in Pokémon GO.

Celebrate Pokémon GO’s 9th Anniversary with a special event

The festivities are set for between 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2025 (local time), and 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, 2025 (also local time).

Event bonuses and new costumes

• Increased chance to become Lucky Friends.
• Increased chance to get Lucky Pokémon in trades.
• PokéStops may turn gold without a Golden Lure Module.
• Increased chance to encounter Shiny Pikachu wearing a cake hat and Shiny Eevee wearing a party hat from raids.
• Gimmighoul holding a 9th anniversary coin will have a 9th anniversary–themed Special Background!
• Friendship levels will increase faster than normal through opening Gifts, trading Pokémon, or battling together in raids, Gyms, or Trainer Battles!
• Chance of finding 9 or 99 (or maybe more!) Gimmighoul Coins when you spin a PokéStop with a Golden Lure Module.
• During the 9th Anniversary Party, you may discover party hats in the wild. Tapping on them will award items, or encounters with event-themed Pokémon.
• Also, for the first time in Pokémon GO, you might even encounter Shiny Gimmighoul—if you’re lucky!

In addition to the above, the 9th Anniversary Party will have special bonuses on certain days!

July 1 at 10:00 a.m. – July 3 at 10:00 a.m. local time

• 1/2 Egg Hatch Distance when Eggs are placed in an Incubator on these days.

July 3 at 10:00 a.m. – July 5 at 10:00 a.m. local time

• 2× XP for catching Pokémon.

July 5 at 10:00 a.m. – July 6 at 8:00 p.m. local time

• 2× Stardust for catching Pokémon.

Shiny Gimmighoul to debut

Few Trainers manage to catch Gimmighoul in Pokemon GO as this elusive creature is challenging to locate. Typically, a Golden Lure Module is needed to find it, but that requires owning Sword and Shield on the Nintendo Switch. To add to the difficulty, the Pokemon is so small it can easily be overlooked.

For the 9th anniversary, you’ll find it easier to obtain Pokémon, and there’s an opportunity to grab a unique, shimmering Gimmighoul in costume. This would be quite the showpiece for your collection, making it worth the hunt. Stockpile some Lure Modules!

Other 9th Anniversary Pokémon GO event details

Besides all this excitement, we’ll also be receiving costumed versions of Eevee and Pikachu during Raids, encounters with costume-wearing Kanto starters in the wild areas, along with a unique collection of Field Research tasks. These tasks may include Gimmighoul, so don’t forget to complete them!

Previously, you may have noticed that there’s a complimentary Time-bound Research available too, in addition to the option for a $1.99 Paid Ticket. Engaging in either of these options will grant you an interaction with Gimmighoul.

An even greater thrill awaits as the Wish Granted Masterwork Research makes its comeback! However, this opportunity is exclusively for those who have yet to complete it. For those who have already done so, there are added bonuses that will be automatically bestowed upon you.
