It begins with Carol’s neighbors attempting to lift her spirits, but failing. The government assures her they’re working to understand her condition and help her find happiness. As Carol goes about her daily life, she discovers a strange emptiness – stores are deserted and planes sit unused, as if everyone is simply too content to need them.
