We recently shared that PlayStation has been experimenting with changing game prices based on factors like how popular a game is, a player’s purchase history, and their location. This system, called dynamic pricing, is now live in some areas. While PlayStation has been testing it for a while, it’s notable to see how it actually works.
Recent reports from Insider Gaming show that PlayStation is using variable pricing, and the differences can be significant. The price you pay for a game can sometimes be nearly 50% lower than what another customer pays, depending on how the pricing system works.
Stellar Blade Price Varies By Almost 50 Percent Thanks To Dynamic Pricing

Insider Gaming discovered a significant price difference for Stellar Blade. One of their writers received a 70% discount, bringing the price down to $20.99, while many other players only saw a 43% discount, costing them $39.89. The game normally retails for $69.99, making the difference in price quite substantial.
Currently, this seems to only apply to games made by PlayStation themselves. However, it was noticed before with a sale on Red Dead Redemption 2’s Ultimate Edition. It looks like PlayStation is offering bigger discounts to players who don’t use their accounts very often, though the exact details aren’t fully known yet.
Okay, so it looks like this whole dynamic pricing thing is probably aimed at getting players who aren’t super committed – the ones who might be on the fence about a game – to spend a little more. PSPrices.com said a while back that over 150 games were involved in the initial test, but it seems like PlayStation is still tweaking how it all works, so things could be different now.
Over the next few months, expect to see more video games using prices that change based on demand. Sony is aiming to find a pricing strategy that appeals to both occasional and frequent players, ultimately to increase their earnings.
