PlayStation shuts down Dark Outlaw Games and signals pullback from mobile gaming efforts

Story Highlights

  • PlayStation has shut down Dark Outlaw Games, a studio formed in 2025 under Jason Blundell.
  • PlayStation confirms scaling back on mobile games but previously announced titles will be supported.
  • Around 50 layoffs reported across US and UK teams, including mobile divisions.

Although the news focuses on PlayStation closing Dark Outlaw Games, it also appears mobile gaming is affected. This shift away from mobile games coincides with PlayStation’s recent layoffs in the US and UK.

So, I’m hearing the company is doing some layoffs, and even though they’re saying it’s a small number, rumors are flying that around 50 people could lose their jobs. It sounds like it’s hitting a bunch of different teams, and there’s even talk it might affect the people working on their mobile games. It’s a bit worrying, honestly.

PlayStation’s interest in working on mobile games was from a long-time

Despite recent changes, PlayStation isn’t leaving mobile gaming altogether. Games like MLB The Show Mobile, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, and projects developed with NCSOFT will still receive support. However, PlayStation plans to reduce its focus on mobile in the future, prioritizing other projects instead.

Sony has long been open about its plans to expand into mobile gaming. Starting in 2021, the company discussed bringing popular PlayStation games to mobile devices, and at one point hoped to release almost half of its games on PC and mobile platforms by 2025.

Sony has been increasingly focused on mobile gaming, as demonstrated by their purchase of Savage Game Studios in 2022 and the creation of a new PlayStation Studios Mobile Division. They are not only developing high-quality mobile games, but also expanding into the popular free-to-play mobile gaming market.

Dark Outlaw Games was a brand new studio, launched just last year as part of an internal development program. Led by Jason Blundell, a veteran of Call of Duty Zombies, the team hadn’t announced or released any games before the studio unexpectedly closed, bringing their journey to an early end.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, this is the second game project led by Jason Blundell that PlayStation has cancelled. His former studio, Deviation Games, was also shut down earlier this year while working on a PlayStation game.

PlayStation has announced more layoffs, including the closure of Dark Outlaw Games, a studio created last year by Jason Blundell, who previously led development on Call of Duty and had another PlayStation studio, Deviation, shut down earlier this year. These cuts also affect PlayStation’s mobile development teams, impacting around 50 employees in total.

It seems early rumors about Dark Outlaw Games developing a mobile game were incorrect. The studio’s recent closure and Sony PlayStation’s decision to scale back its mobile plans are unrelated events that simply occurred around the same time.
