The God of War series has been a massive hit in the gaming world since the early 2000s. New games in the series are usually announced with a lot of fanfare, so it was unexpected when Sony quietly released the latest installment without a major announcement.

A Brand-New God of War Game Was Shadow Dropped Today
God of War: Sons of Sparta is an official prequel to the main God of War series. The game tells the story of a young Kratos and his brother Deimos as they face difficult challenges to become skilled warriors. According to the game’s description, they’ll be tested to their limits and forced to consider what duty and honor truly mean.
Mega Cat Studios, known for the Backyard series, is creating a 2D, pixel-art action game called God of War Sons of Sparta, with help from the original developers of God of War at Santa Monica Studio. Based on the gameplay revealed in the trailer, Sons of Sparta appears heavily inspired by classic Castlevania games.
Before revealing God of War: Sons of Sparta, Santa Monica Studio excited fans during PlayStation’s State of Play by announcing they were rebuilding the original God of War trilogy, which initially came out between 2005 and 2010. They cautioned that the full remake would take a while, so Sons of Sparta was created as an interim release to keep fans engaged.
God of War: Sons of Sparta is the newest main game in the God of War series, following 2022’s God of War Ragnarök. Before that, the 2018 God of War—which was a major success—came out after a four-year wait. The only new content released in the meantime was a version of God of War for PC. More recently, in 2023 and 2024, God of War Ragnarök: Valhalla was released on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The game God of War: Sons of Sparta is a PlayStation 5 exclusive. It’s currently available for $29.99, which is a great price considering how game costs are rising. Fans were really surprised by this release and are hoping to learn more about the upcoming God of War remake soon.
