Disney has reportedly cast a new lead actor to take over the role of Captain Jack Sparrow in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 6. It’s been almost ten years since the last film, Dead Men Tell No Tales, and Disney has been working to continue the series, hinting at the return of Davy Jones in a previous post-credits scene. Development of new Pirates of the Caribbean movies has faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 Hollywood strikes, and legal issues involving Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, as well as other creative challenges.
A new Pirates of the Caribbean movie is in the works, and according to The InSneider, Disney has brought on Krysty Wilson-Cairns – the Oscar-nominated writer of 1917 – to write the script. The film will likely center around Jack Sparrow’s son, and appears to be moving forward with a new lead, rather than Johnny Depp reprising his iconic role.
Although Johnny Depp’s son is reportedly joining the new Pirates of the Caribbean films, it strongly suggests Depp himself won’t be reprising his leading role, despite the possibility of him returning in some capacity.
The report also stated that “Pirates 6” will likely feature Margot Robbie, known for her role in “Barbie,” as a new character. Robbie was originally set to star in a separate “Pirates” spin-off film geared towards female audiences, written by Christina Hodson (who also worked on “The Flash”), but Disney has apparently canceled that project.
In 2022, producer Jerry Bruckheimer revealed that Disney was working on two new Pirates of the Caribbean films. One would star Margot Robbie in the lead role, and the other would feature a new, younger group of actors, with casting nearly finalized at the time.
Disney’s new CEO, Josh D’Amaro, is reportedly making a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie a key focus. The studio wants to create a film that feels like the original Pirates movies but is updated for today’s audiences and made more affordably.
Following accusations of domestic abuse made by his ex-wife, Amber Heard, it seemed unlikely Johnny Depp would work with Disney again. However, after winning his defamation lawsuit and having the allegations dismissed, many fans expressed a strong desire to see him reprise his role in a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film.
Will Johnny Depp’s Jack Sparrow Join His Son in Pirates 6?

Following Johnny Depp’s win in his defamation lawsuit against Amber Heard, Disney considered bringing Jack Sparrow back for a future Pirates of the Caribbean film, possibly including him in one of two planned movies.
With reports that Margot Robbie will be in Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and the film will feature Jack Sparrow’s son, many are wondering if plans for a separate Pirates project have been combined into this one movie.
In August 2025, Jerry Bruckheimer told Entertainment Weekly he’s talked with Johnny Depp about coming back to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and believes it will happen, as long as he’s happy with the script.
He’s likely to take the role if he enjoys the script. Ultimately, the writing is the most important thing. We’re still developing the screenplay and are determined to make the project happen. We’re almost finished with the script, but need to refine it a little more.
As a big fan, I was really surprised to hear the producer call the next Pirates movie a “reboot,” but he also made it clear he wants Johnny Depp back, which is awesome! It sounds like a lot has been happening behind the scenes with the sequel – especially since they got a new writer and Disney has a new CEO. Things could definitely be different than we expected!
It remains to be seen if Johnny Depp will reprise his role, as bringing Captain Jack Sparrow back would involve a lot of negotiation. This includes finding time in Depp’s packed schedule and agreeing on a salary, which could be difficult if Disney is aiming to reduce costs.
If Johnny Depp returns for a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film, it will likely be in a brief appearance or smaller role, as the focus shifts to a new cast led by his potential on-screen son and Margot Robbie.
