Pirates of the Caribbean 6: Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush Might Be Back!

For a while now, fans have been yearning for updates on the project, but there hasn’t been significant advancement since it underwent various transformations. However, reliable sources such as The Hollywood Reporter indicate that Johnny Depp is in serious discussions to reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow within the franchise. Interestingly, Geoffrey Rush, who played Captain Barbossa, has also expressed a desire to return, telling The Daily Telegraph, “I had a wonderful time on that for quite some time. It was about 12 or 15 years, from start to finish. But after the last installment, I chose not to be resurrected. I felt it would have been inappropriate considering I had sacrificed my life for my own child. If Johnny [Depp] is on board…”, implying that he might return if Depp decides to participate.

It’s sparked debate once again among fans what the next Pirates of the Caribbean film, Pirates of the Caribbean 6, might entail, given that the last installment, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, ended on a suspenseful note. The return of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann, along with the rumored resurrection of Davy Jones, leaves several storylines to explore if the series intends to continue. However, it was recently announced that an actress who plays a key role in the franchise has concerns about spending too much time away from her family while filming, leaving the future of the sequel uncertain. Still, there’s plenty more information to come regarding this upcoming movie.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 Has Some Promising Updates

The Film Has Gone Through Multiple Incarnations

Initially, when news about Pirates of the Caribbean 6 broke out, there were differing views on its direction. It was reported that a reboot featuring Margot Robbie might be the chosen path. However, producer Jerry Bruckheimer confirmed that Disney also wanted to create other spin-offs within the same universe, with two movies in production simultaneously. Robbie had previously mentioned that they had an idea for a female-led story, but it seems this concept has been shelved, possibly due to Robbie’s busy schedule following the success of Barbie. As of now, there have been no recent updates on the Margot Robbie concept.

In other places, there were rumors circulating about Disney considering Karen Gillan for the lead role in a separate “Pirates of the Caribbean” film. Some thought she might play Redd, a character from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” ride at Disney parks whom Gillan resembles. However, just like the movie starring Margot Robbie, this idea seems to have disappeared, and it looks like Disney will no longer be pursuing it. Instead, they seem to be focusing on creating a new film that closely follows the original installments and their main characters. Although they initially planned to release two female-led movies around the same time, it appears that those plans may have been delayed or abandoned.

Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is Still Trying to Set Sail

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer Has Already Dropped Some Names

Over the past few years, multiple writers have been associated with drafting stories for Pirates of the Caribbean 6, regardless of its final form. For instance, Craig Mazin revealed to one outlet that he and Ted Elliot had proposed a film set in this universe, stating, “We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too unusual. And they did! Then he wrote an outstanding script, but the writers’ strike occurred, and everyone was on standby.” In contrast, Jerry Bruckheimer disclosed to another source that Jeff Nathanson and Christina Hodson were individually developing different Pirates of the Caribbean scripts, either of which could evolve into the sixth movie, though no definitive decision has been made yet. With actors like Orlando Bloom expressing interest in reprising their roles, it remains to be seen how this might influence script modifications.

It’s plausible that Disney is continuing work on two undisclosed projects, or they might have opted instead for a Johnny Depp-led project that aligns with fans’ expectations of the franchise. Regardless, it seems there’s still a chance the name will play a significant role in the studio’s future. Yet, no major announcements regarding this seem imminent at the upcoming event.
