Pipilotti Rist’s Hypnotic Landscapes Take Shape at UCCA Beijing
Pipilotti Rist has spent three decades exploring the connection between video art and the human body using captivating landscapes of sensation and color. The renowned Swiss artist has now graced Beijing’s UCCA Center for Contemporary Arts, where she presented “Your Palm is My Universe,” her most recent immersive solo exhibition.
Yan Fang has organized an exhibition that highlights Rist’s groundbreaking artistic journey, featuring iconic pieces such as “I’m Not the Girl Who Misses Much” (1986) and “You Called Me Jacky” (1990), along with never-before-seen creations. A significant addition is a new, extensive video installation – the largest commission by the museum to date. Rooted in ecological ideas and Taoist philosophy, Rist’s sensory works provide thoughtful counterpoints to the algorithmic reasoning of contemporary visual culture.
In 2025, I’m completely captivated by “Your Palm is My Universe,” an extraordinary installation at UCCA’s Great Hall that immerses me in a cinematic, dream-like environment. The loops of hands, feet, and faces create patterns on flowing fabric drapes, transforming the space into a living, breathing “collective organism.” Surma’s ambient soundscape serves as the perfect backdrop for this exploration of bodily reality, where light and sound ebb and flow through the hall, creating a profound sensory experience.
In the heart of this gaming world, alongside the iconic “Heaven on Earth” mural and the captivating “Spring Chaoyang Chandelier” adorned with pink swimsuits, I delve deeper into understanding the intricate balance between personal identity and collective existence. This journey uncovers themes of societal norms, private connections, and public performances – a fascinating exploration indeed!
Artist Rist, known for his work exploring themes like vulnerability, innocence, and the emotional impact of contemporary life, creates a radiant realm where amazement emerges amidst the clutter of excessive information. In their latest announcement, the museum described this exhibition as an intensely colorful depiction of Rist’s lasting belief that art serves as a platform for empathy, healing, and creativity to manifest in our physical experience.
The exhibition is now on view in Beijing through October 19.
