Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour returns with mellow magnificence: ADRIAN THRILLS reviews Luck and Strange

Pink Floyd's David Gilmour returns with mellow magnificence: ADRIAN THRILLS reviews Luck and Strange

As a music enthusiast with a penchant for both classic and contemporary tunes, I find myself utterly captivated by these two releases. On one hand, we have David Gilmour‘s latest offering, Piper’s Call, a testament to his timeless artistry that echoes the age-old struggle between fame, hedonism, and mortality. The Montgolfier Brothers cover, Between Two Points, is a delightful surprise, seamlessly blending with Gilmour’s original compositions.

DAVID GILMOUR: Luck And Strange (Sony)

Verdict: Mellow magnificence

2020 lockdowns proved exceptionally productive for David Gilmour, as they unexpectedly kept him and his entire family on a Sussex farm for extended periods. This unforeseen circumstance served as the foundation for the creation of Gilmour’s first solo album in nearly a decade

To combat boredom during the pandemic, the Gilmour family started a weekly live-broadcast which eventually earned them the moniker “The Von Trapped Family”

At first, it was an event for Polly Samson, the novelist wife of a guitarist, to read books aloud. However, it later transformed into a more casual endeavor that encompassed wine-infused stories and music, with the majority being contributed by David and his youngest daughter Romany

The sudden flash of creativity ignited the embers that gave birth to Luck And Strange, now being released today. Enhanced by Gilmour’s experienced studio musicians and guided by a fresh hand from producer Charlie Andrew, this project is more than just a family production

However, it is the essential roles played by Polly, Romany, and the sons of David – Charlie, Joe, and Gabriel – that embody its heartwarming and contemplative essence

Kicking off the album with a performance at a London hotel, Gilmour, who became part of Pink Floyd in 1968, expressed appreciation for its humble, everyday beginnings

‘We did some songs in lockdown, and that helped,’ he said.

Romany beautifully strummed the harp and sang, creating an extraordinary moment. It brought back memories of the beautiful blended voices within a family, much like The Everly Brothers and The Beach Boys

There’s also a touching cameo from his late Floyd bandmate Richard Wright.

On the soothing title track, the keyboardist performs both electric piano and Hammond organ. His parts were recorded during a jam session at David’s barn back in 2007, which was a year prior to Wright’s passing. Both the CD and Blu-ray editions of Luck And Strange include the full 14-minute original piece

As a lifestyle enthusiast, I find that the lyrics of this album, primarily penned by Samson, exude a profound sense of introspection and thoughtfulness. The title track, composed during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, carries an echo of post-war optimism, weaving in themes reminiscent of Gilmour’s early days in Cambridge

‘It was a fine time to be born, demob-happy street and free milk for us all,’ he reflects.

In other places, The Piper’s Call delves into the Faustian bargain certain people make with fame and indulgence (‘the ride is thrilling, the aftermath brutal’), meanwhile, the melodic lullaby Sings revisits a topic reminiscent of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon – the concept of mortality

‘Darling, turn back the clock, give me time, make it stop,’ Gilmour urges.

Among the nine fresh releases are nine fresh, original tracks (with the folksy folk-style bonus track titled “Yes, entitled Yes, there’s Yes, Yes, titled ‘Yes, Yes, a captivoryou’vebeenly, there’you will findn’veivoryour own cover version and anengrossum. Originally by indie-pop duo The Montgolfier Brothers, Between Two Points fits in seamlessly, with Romany’s beautiful one-take vocals surviving largely intact from a version that was created in lockdown.

Besides the album “Dark And Velvet Nights,” which features loud drumbeats and rough vocals, “Luck And Strange” is not an aggressive comeback

However, it showcases the subtle talents of its creator while giving it a modern polish. With Gilmour preparing for live performances and a new album, he’s a legendary rock artist at the peak of his momentum

MADONNA: Like A Prayer (Rhino reissue)

Verdict: Pop queen’s masterpiece revisited

At a crucial juncture, Madonna found herself in a challenging phase of life as she recently celebrated her 30th birthday. Her marriage to Sean Penn had ended, and her portrayal in the 1987 comedy movie “Who’s That Girl” drew harsh criticism from film critics

Instead of maintaining an impersonal tone in song composition, she chose to express her life experiences through her lyrics. These included her challenges growing up as a Catholic (Act Of Contrition), the sorrow following her mother’s passing (the mournful ballad Promise To Try), and her bond with her father (Oh Father)

Her failed marriage was the inspiration for Till Death Do Us Part, a song dripping with irony. ‘I’m not your friend, I’m just your little wife,’ she sang.

Each of her two primary contributors brought a unique touch to her work. Her ex-boyfriend Stephen Bray, a co-writer for the 1985 hit “Into The Groove,” accentuated her dance floor sensibilities in the song “Express Yourself.”

In my perspective, as a devoted devotee, Patrick Leonard, the musical director, Patrick Leonard adopted a more melodious melody approach in Cherish, he crafted, Cherish, Cherish, took on Cherish and the melodic, specifically on “C Cherish and our duet, Cherish and title track and the title track. Furthermore, Cherish and the title track’s approach, with a more melodic one on Cherish’s melodic approach, Cherish on Cherish, Cherish’s approach on Love Song

The only letdown is the lack of bonus material: such a landmark album warrants a deeper dig into the archives. Despite that, though, it remains a high-water mark for 1980s pop.

Both albums out today.
