They were the on-screen sweethearts in the classic Australian teen movie Looking for Alibrandi.
And now, 25 years after the film hit screens, stars Pia Miranda and Kick Gurry have reunited.
On Monday, Pia, who is 52 years old, posted a selfie on social media showing them catching up with someone at a Melbourne bar.
Via an Instagram post, Pia playfully alluded to her character Josie Alibrandi from the series and the romantic interest, Jacob, who gained popularity as a heartthrob after his role, at the age of 47.
I ran into Josie and Jacob enjoying some drinks at our neighborhood pub, and they looked genuinely happy. I have to admit, I was a bit taken aback that they’re still together, but she chuckled and made a joke about it.
In the photograph, the timeless actress, easily identifiable due to her breakout role, bore a striking contrast. On the other hand, Gurry has grown a salt-and-pepper beard and sported a sleek hairstyle, a far cry from his portrayal as a lively schoolboy character.

Pia’s post received a lot of positive reactions from people fondly recalling the movie, which became an immediate hit when it premiered in Australia back in 2000.
‘All our childhood memories flooding back,’ commented one follower.
Another person expressed joy, saying this brings back the happiness of their 16-year-old high school days. A third fan couldn’t contain their excitement, stating that their 15-year-old self absolutely adores it!
Recently, Kick and Pia walked together on the red carpet during the Melbourne International Film Festival. They were there to unveil a refreshed edition of Looking for Alibrandi.
According to the 1992 novel with the same title written by Melina Marchetta, the movie was helmed by Kate Woods and primarily focuses on the life of seventeen-year-old Josie Alibrandi. (or simply: The film based on the 1992 book “Looking for Alibrandi” by Melina Marchetta, directed by Kate Woods, revolves around the life of seventeen-year-old Josie Alibrandi.)
The majority of the narrative focuses on Josie’s efforts to embrace her Italian background while navigating the challenges of attending an elite private school.
She also navigates her first romance with the hunky Jacob (Gurry).
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but gush over Pia’s outstanding performance in that movie! Her starring role earned her a well-deserved triumph at the AACTA Awards, nabbing the coveted Best Actress title in 2000. On top of that, she even managed to secure a nomination for the prestigious FCCA Best Actor award – talk about versatility!

However, she later admitted that she struggled to make ends meet as she became a household name.
In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald in 2023, the actress from Wentworth admitted that when Looking for Alibrandi was released, her life took a dramatic turn. Despite achieving immense fame, she continued to grapple with financial struggles, finding it difficult to cover her monthly rent expenses.
Pia shared that the situation was quite tense for her. She was identified on the street, yet the promised financial security didn’t materialize, which came as a surprise to her.
Pia confessed that during the year following the release of “Looking For Alibrandi,” she was unable to secure even one acting job, despite the movie’s high popularity.
Additionally, Pia has been featured on popular television programs such as Wentworth, All Saints, Mustangs FC, and The Secret Life of Us after that point.
In addition, she secured a spot on the Australian version of Survivor in 2019 and ultimately emerged victorious, earning herself AUD 500,000.
In March 2001, she got married to Luke Hanigan, the frontman and guitarist of the well-known rock band Lo-Tel, who hails from Australia.
In the year 2000, Pia and Luke started going out together, and just four months into their romance, they got married. This loving pair are proud parents to Lilly, who is now fourteen years old, and James, who turned eleven recently.
Previously, Kick has carved out a successful acting path in both Australia and the U.S., landing parts in the 2017 film “War Machine” starring Brad Pitt, as well as the 2014 blockbuster “Edge of Tomorrow,” headlined by Tom Cruise.
Apart from that, he was featured in the Australian streaming series “Caught” (2023), television shows like “Offspring” (2012), and the ABC’s surfing drama “Barrons” (2022).
