The investigation concluded that ITV had not concealed the romantic involvement, and it was revealed that senior management put forth significant efforts to uncover the facts as early as 2019 – a full four years prior to the public disclosure of the relationship.
An outside examination concluded that the channel didn’t manage to discover crucial proof regarding the matter until Schofield confessed his involvement in May 2023 to the Mail. He had previously denied the relationship and later admitted it was a lie.
ITV executives stated that both Schofield and an unidentified runner, who was involved in a romantic relationship with him, consistently denied accusations of their involvement until Schofield made a dramatic exit from ITV and issued a formal apology.
Among the 48 individuals interviewed, just a single individual – a junior staff member – claimed to be aware of the presenter’s previous romantic connection with a younger male ex-colleague prior to its public disclosure in May.
Mulcahy disclosed that Schofield declined participation in the investigation concerning his exit, citing potential harm to his wellbeing. Moreover, she mentioned that his mental health has reportedly worsened since then.
Schofield’s former colleague and lover also declined to participate in the report.
However, staff at ITV have been left cross, accusing the report of being a ‘waste of time’.
The findings did reveal that there was a culture of silence at the channel, saying that junior employees at ITV’s This Morning still fear that speaking out will damage their careers in the industry.
