“What’s more important — money or the future of the youth?”
While in India, President Ferdinand Marcos proposed a meeting to deliberate on the future of internet-based gambling, as both the Catholic Church and the Philippine Senate have expressed their wishes for a ban on it.
In just one day’s time, Erwin Tulfo, who serves as the chairman of the Senate Committee on Games and Amusements, declared that they will initiate an investigation regarding the future of online gaming. The focus will be on its impact on society, and they may propose solutions as the destiny of online gambling remains uncertain.

Philippine Senate wants online gambling banned
Starting August 14th, the Philippine Senate committee will delve into the bills and proposals surrounding online gambling. Tulfo has emphasized the importance of addressing this issue, stating that it has become increasingly severe and now qualifies as a crisis.
The Philippine Senate publicly advocates for a comprehensive prohibition of internet-based gambling, implying that stricter controls could lead to a surge in unauthorized providers. In his remarks, he stated, “Even children were participating in gambling.” However, he emphasized, “What should be prioritized – financial gains or the well-being of our youth?
Despite holding a firm stance on online gambling, Tulfo is open to evaluating its effects and considering its possible future implications alongside key figures such as PAGCOR, DOF members, and other relevant stakeholders.
President Marcos’ statement implies that a total ban might not be imminent. He stated, “I don’t want to sway anyone’s views before we hear from the group discussing the matter. However, personally, I believe a ban won’t solve the problem entirely. We need to approach this situation with caution in our response.” This was during a media event in Bengaluru, India.
In simpler terms, the Philippine authorities are actively implementing new rules to enhance the regulation of online gambling and mitigate any negative impacts associated with it. Additionally, the country’s main banking authority intends to establish limits on financial transactions related to online gambling with the aim of bolstering consumer safety.
Simultaneously, multiple authorized gaming providers banded together to form the PlaySafe Alliance, with a mission to safeguard online gambling and combat unlawful operators.
