Philippine licensed operators form alliance to safeguard online gambling

Nineteen licensed operators in the Philippines have come together to form PlaySafe Alliance.

By July 2025, as discussions about an outright prohibition of internet gambling swirled throughout the nation, numerous licensed operators based in the Philippines voiced their worries that such a ban might instead fuel underground gambling and drive players towards illicit activities.

Moving on to the present, several Filipino operators have banded together to safeguard and advance online gambling with an emphasis on safety and sustainability.

Licensed operators form PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines to combat illegal gambling

On August 7, 19 representatives from 19 different operators gathered in Taguig City to establish the PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines. Among these notable participants were Digiplus Interactive Corporation and World Platinum Technologies.

The PlaySafe Alliance, as reported by its participants, came together with the objective of enhancing consumer safety, adhering to regulatory standards, and fighting against unlawful betting. Furthermore, they strive to foster a responsible and healthy approach towards online gaming.

Mike Defensor, president of World Platinum Technologies, commented on the new alliance, stating, “The primary threat in online gambling lies within the unregulated market. Without a license or regulations, minors can participate, taxes go unpaid, and rules are disregarded. Instead of being safeguarded, the public is actually placed in danger.

Additionally, he emphasized the significance of implementing stringent controls and vigilant oversight for legitimate gaming operators, ensuring a secure, accountable, and equitable experience for all participants.

The PlaySafe Alliance could collaborate with PAGCOR to enhance multiple aspects of online gambling, including advertisements, identity verification (KYC), and educating consumers. These are sectors where the Philippine government has expressed a desire for improvement and investment in the past.

Previously this year, a past PAGC commissioner advocated for an absolute prohibition of advertisements for online gaming, claiming they contribute to problematic gambling habits. More recently, Malacañang has acknowledged that they are examining the possible consequences if online gambling were banned within the nation.

Operators contend that regulation is crucial, but Senator Erwin Tulfo, head of the Senate Games and Amusements Committee, disagrees. Instead, he argues that existing law enforcement isn’t strong enough. He posits that stricter regulations might not solve the issue, as they could potentially fuel illegal gambling in the Philippines instead.

In related updates, the Philippine central bank has unveiled plans for implementing fresh regulations aimed at enhancing the safety and efficiency of online gambling transactions.
