Philip K. Dick’s The Future is Ours Will be The Netflix Event of the Decade

A captivating dystopian novel is being turned into a miniseries, based on the early writings of celebrated science fiction author Philip K. Dick. With its timely themes and historical significance as an adaptation of a classic Dick story, the miniseries could become the biggest sci-fi event in years.

Philip K. Dick is a hugely influential science fiction writer of the 20th century. His work has inspired several famous films, including Blade Runner, which was based on his novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and Minority Report, adapted from his short story of the same name. Now, another adaptation of his work is currently being developed.

The World Jones Made Is Philip K. Dick’s Iconic 1956 Science Fiction Novel

Netflix is creating a series based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novel, The World Jones Made. The story centers on Floyd Jones, a man with the extraordinary ability to accurately predict the future. Because he can see about a year ahead, he’s incredibly powerful and ultimately becomes the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Jones controls the world through his extraordinary abilities, always one step ahead of anyone who tries to take his power – whether they’re political opponents, would-be assassins, or rivals. He’s become almost like a god to people, revered as a savior. However, his reign is challenged when a new character appears with powers that contradict Jones’s belief in a predetermined future, introducing doubt into what seemed like an unbreakable destiny.

Though not as famous as some of his other novels, The World Jones Made explores the important themes of fate versus choice that appear throughout Philip K. Dick’s work. Published in 1956, this novel is notably political, mirroring the fears of the Cold War era and raising concerns about government surveillance and oppressive control. The story’s ruler can foresee the future, which allows him to eliminate anyone who might oppose him.

Similar to novels Dick wrote later, such as Ubik and The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, The World Jones Made delves into the idea of predicting the future – a theme he often returned to. This 1956 novel introduces the concept of “pre-cogs” – characters who can foresee events – and lays the groundwork for a key element found in many of his later stories.

Netflix Is Adapting Philip K. Dick’s Novel Into Miniseries The Future Is Ours

In October 2025, Netflix revealed plans to create a Spanish-language miniseries based on Philip K. Dick’s 1956 novel. The eight-episode series, titled El futuro es nuestro (The Future Is Ours), will feature a cast and crew largely comprised of Latin American talent, a deliberate choice that highlights a central theme of Dick’s original story.

The Future Is Ours will be the first installment, spearheaded by a Latin American team. The story is set in 2047, during a time of environmental disaster. This leads to the formation of FedSur, a powerful alliance of South American nations determined to fight famine and unrest, even if it means taking drastic measures.

In Dick’s novel, characters from South America join the fight against Floyd’s control, adding a significant global dimension to the story. Given their experience with productions like The Eternaut and The Man in the High Castle, it’s fitting that Latin American creatives are contributing to this project as well.

The central conflict in The Future Is Ours revolves around two characters: preacher Jonas Flores, played by Emiliano Zurita, and police officer Hugo Crussi, played by Enzo Vogrincic. These characters are inspired by Floyd Jones and Crussik from the original novel, but it’s still unclear how faithfully the miniseries will adapt their stories.

Netflix’s New Project Is Part Of A Larger Philip K. Dick Movement

Fans anticipating a miniseries based on Dick’s science fiction novel will be pleased to learn it’s part of a growing wave of adaptations. The series, titled The Future Is Ours, will be produced by K&S Films and Electric Shepherd Productions, which represents the estate of Philip K. Dick.

Founded in 2007 by Dick’s daughter, Isa Dick Hackett, the company aims to bring her father’s stories to new audiences. It produces projects inspired by his work, including films like A Scanner Darkly and The Adjustment Bureau, as well as a streaming series based on his award-winning novel.

Fans of Philip K. Dick have another exciting series to anticipate: Blade Runner 2099 on Prime Video. Developed with Ridley Scott, the director of the original Blade Runner (1982), this new series will continue the story of the films and is scheduled to premiere in 2026.

Author Lisa Hackett expressed her excitement about working with Netflix to create the first Spanish-language series based on her father’s writing. She praised the show, developed by Mateo Gil, as creative and daring, while also highlighting that it stayed true to the spirit of the original story. The series is currently slated for release in 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been announced.
