Phil Collins, 73, admits it's 'still sinking in' that he will not perform again after retirement for health issues

As a dedicated follower of Phil Collins’ illustrious career, I find it heartwrenching to witness the musical titan grappling with his retirement from live performances. His confession that he is still coming to terms with this reality resonates deeply, as we all have felt the pang of saying goodbye to something we love.

Phil Collins acknowledges that it’s taking time for him to fully accept that he won’t be able to perform anymore following his retirement in 2022.

The ex-lead singer of Genesis, who is now 73 years old, stopped performing live shows due to persistent problems with his neck and back.

As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement over the latest project featuring our legendary musician – famed for his unforgettable drumbeats and electrifying voice. This time around, he’s gracing the screen in a new documentary titled “Phil Collins: Drummer First.” It promises to offer an intimate look at his drumming journey, which I simply can’t wait to delve into!

In a touching moment, the delicate-appearing musician returns emotionally to his own drum kit, taking a seat and grasping a pair of drumsticks.

As a devoted fan, I openly shared my feelings about accepting the reality that I can no longer perform at concerts, as captured on video in 2022.

He mentioned, “I’m still wrapping my head around it a bit,” he said. “You see, I’m 71 years old. My entire life has been dedicated to drumming. The idea of no longer being able to do so is quite unexpected and jarring.

In this documentary, Phil shares his personal life experiences using his own voice, emphasizing more on his love for drumming compared to his singing accomplishments.

In that part of the movie, Phil expressed, “I don’t consider myself a singer who also plays the drums. I’d say I’m primarily a drummer who occasionally sings.

In one emotional scene, Phil is seen walking toward his drum kit with the help of his son Nic, 23, who stepped in as Genesis’ drummer during their farewell tours.

With drumsticks in hand after many years, an evidently stunned Phil confessed, “This feels quite unusual, holding these two again.

In my own words, I’d express it as follows: “Should I ever find myself waking up with drumsticks in hand, I am ready to give it a try.

‘I just feel like I’ve used up my air miles.’

In this documentary, produced by the digital drum tutoring service Drumeo, you’ll find honors paid to legendary drummers such as Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater.

As a connoisseur of all things lifestyle, I must express my admiration for Phil Collins. His drumming stands out distinctly, and upon hearing it, there’s an immediate recognition that sets him apart. However, in my opinion, he is regrettably underappreciated, particularly within the progressive music scene. He truly deserves more recognition as a prog icon.

However, the most heartfelt homage originates from the late Dom Famularo, who, prior to his passing, eloquently expressed a sentiment reminiscent of the awe experienced during Mozart’s era: “Living in the time of Phil Collins is nearly as extraordinary as living during the times of Mozart.

In 2009, a severe spinal injury that Phil suffered while performing resulted in persistent nerve damage, causing him health issues.

2009 saw him express to the Daily Mail that it was improbable he would play the drums again, sharing that after 50 years of drumming, his vertebrae had been compressing his spinal cord due to his drumming posture. In simpler terms, he stated that after playing drums for 50 years, he had to stop because the way he played was causing damage to his spine.

He mentioned that his skill is a result of numerous years spent practicing. Now, handling the sticks causes him discomfort, and at times, he had to secure them with tape just to continue playing.

Regardless of the hardships he faced, following two separations and a series of concerts aimed at reconciliation, he successfully rejoined Genesis for their “The Last Domino?” tour in 2022, thus penning a poignant page in the annals of the band’s timeline.

In August, it was disclosed that Phil’s good friend has been privy to him secretly composing fresh tunes, even amidst his persistent health complications.

Previously, Phil had released his latest original music for the 2003 Disney movie Brother Bear, with his most recent solo work of original tunes being Testify back in 2002. After that, he put out an album featuring covers of R&B classics titled Going Back in 2010.

Viewers can catch the video featuring Phil Collins, a renowned drummer, on Drumeo’s YouTube channel starting from this coming Wednesday, specifically on December 18.
