“Phenomenal” or “a wasted opportunity”? As Handmaid’s Tale airs its finale, fans are divided
The Handmaid’s Tale season six finale spoilers follow.
The television series, titled “The Handmaid’s Tale“, wrapped up its run following a span of six seasons, leaving viewers in a state of disagreement regarding the finale.
As a dedicated gamer (and also a fan of great storytelling), I just can’t wait to dive back into the world of “The Handmaid’s Tale” since its sixth and concluding season is now streaming in the US, a few weeks ahead for my UK friends on Prime Video and Channel 4. But beware, if you don’t want any spoilers, stop reading here! The finale episode unfolded today, continuing the tale of June Osborne, brilliantly portrayed by Elisabeth Moss, as she navigates the aftermath of a powerful revolution against the oppressive regime of Gilead.
What to Read Next
Although some viewers find the episode and the entire series extraordinary, labeling it “phenomenal”, others have expressed dissatisfaction instead.
It appears that the most significant letdown lies in the failure to bring about a meeting between June and her daughter Hannah, who was separated from her during childhood and adopted by another family under the rule of Gilead.
A spectator, expressing their feelings about the final episode, posted under a video on the show’s Instagram page: “What on earth happened?! I understand the overall message. But leaving so many plot threads untied? I can’t fathom why there wasn’t an extra episode or even another season to bring Hannah back?
What we longed for was a Hannah reunion! It wasn’t too much to hope for, was it?” someone exclaimed, while another chimed in: “You completely missed the mark in the last episode. Such a lost chance.
A fourth commented, “What’s most disappointing about the whole situation is that Hannah didn’t get a conclusion where she was involved.” From the start, Hannah was the heart of this endeavor.
Despite some dissatisfaction, many were pleased with the ending, expressing their appreciation as follows: “Kudos to all involved in this production – it was simply outstanding!
One individual noted that June “never regains Hannah” from Margaret Atwood’s initial work, whereas another appreciated the conclusion as it “provides a tantalizing setup for what follows next.
A few enthusiasts are aware that a new television show called “The Testaments” – derived from Margaret Atwood’s 2019 book of the same title – is being developed at this very moment.
15 years following the initial tale, “The Testaments” unfolds from the viewpoint of Aunt Lydia, who has covertly allied with the resistance movement. Hannah, now known as Agnes by her adopted family, will feature in the narrative as she starts to scrutinize Gilead and her ancestry.
[The Testaments] revolves around a woman at the pinnacle of power in Gilead. This story centers around Hannah or Agnes, the daughter of a high-ranking commander who holds the most influential position among women in Gilead, and it remains a terrible place.” (Bruce Miller, show’s creator, recently clarified.)
We discover that even if you’re at the top of the social hierarchy in a misogynistic society, it doesn’t mean things are any easier for you. In fact, being at the top might just make you a more visible target.
You can currently stream seasons 1 through 5 of “The Handmaid’s Tale” on Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, season 6 of the series is airing on both Prime Video and Channel 4 in the United Kingdom.
