Peter’s Definitive The Night Agent Ending & Potential Spinoff Story Addressed By Gabriel Brasso

Gabriel Basso addresses Peter’s future in The Night Agent and the possibility of a spinoff story.

The popular Netflix thriller The Night Agent is back for a third season. The story picks up with FBI agent Peter Sutherland (Basso) continuing his dangerous mission as a double agent. After the events of season 2, he’ll likely be working with Jacob Monroe (Louis Herthum) to uncover corruption within the new president’s administration.

During a conversation with ScreenRant’s Ash Crossan about the future of The Night Agent, Gabriel Basso discussed the show’s longevity. He admitted enjoying the job security, but also expressed a desire not to continue the series so long that viewers start to feel his character should have stopped long ago. He wants to avoid a situation where people think he stayed in the role for too long.

I’d like to see Peter develop as a character, even though it might seem surprising. Having a stable job is good, but I definitely don’t want to keep fighting until people think I should have stopped a long time ago. I want to avoid getting to that point.

Though Basso doesn’t envision the show continuing forever with Peter as the main character, he’s open to the idea of The Night Agent going on with a different lead. He hopes viewers will feel the story is complete and be ready for a new character or storyline, saying, “I want people to feel like, ‘Okay, that story’s done. Now let’s see a new night agent or explore another part of this world.’ Peter’s arc is finished, and I definitely don’t want the show to drag on.”

These comments from Basso follow recent discussions with the show’s creator, Shawn Ryan, about the future of The Night Agent and possible spin-off series. Ryan mentioned there had been some initial talk of spin-offs, but currently, none are being actively developed. He considered exploring a spin-off immediately after season two, but the idea wasn’t developed enough to move forward.

Despite the lack of an official announcement, it looks like The Night Agent will likely be back for a fourth season. Ryan recently told Deadline that the writers are scheduled to start working on new episodes in 2025. He also revealed they’ve already begun developing the storyline and have some scripts in progress. He anticipates Netflix will make a final decision about season 4 within a week or a month after season 3 is released.

The Netflix series starts with Peter, a White House staffer manning an emergency hotline, who gets thrust into a high-level conspiracy when the phone rings. The first season quickly became a huge hit, landing a spot among Netflix’s most popular English-language shows ever. Currently, it’s ranked tenth with an impressive 98.2 million views.

While Season 2 didn’t attract as many viewers as its first season, it still performed well with nearly 14 million people tuning in during its first week. This success, along with talk of potential spinoffs and a fourth season, suggests that The Night Agent will likely continue beyond its current run.

Although the show seems to be doing well, Ryan hasn’t said anything about plans to replace Gabriel Basso’s character, Peter. He previously explained that the show is about the role of ‘The Night Agent,’ not specifically about Gabriel Basso, and that Basso might eventually decide to move on, leading to a new actor taking on the part.

It’s likely the show’s creator and the writers might be wrapping up Peter’s storyline soon, but the final decision rests with the actor when he feels it’s the right time. The show’s structure allows for this, as it centers around ‘Night Action,’ a government program that sends agents to handle critical national security issues.

Gabriel Basso will continue to star in season 3 of The Night Agent, but this season will feature a lot of new faces. While some characters are returning – including Jacob Monroe and Catherine Weaver played by David Herthum and Amanda Warren – Luciane Buchanan won’t be reprising her role as Rose Larkin.

Fola Evans-Akingbola, Ward Horton, and Albert Jones have become regular cast members, and the show is adding new actors David Lyons, Jennifer Morrison, Stephen Moyer, Genesis Rodriguez, Callum Vinson, and Sharma to the main lineup.

All ten episodes of The Night Agent season 3 are now available on Netflix.
