Peter Overton Spills the Tea on Hilarious Throat Lozenge Blunder Live on Air!
Peter Overton has spoken candidly regarding the incident where he accidentally dropped a lozenge during a live broadcast.
The error happened only a few minutes after the commencement of the 9News Sydney broadcast on Thursday evening, while Peter was transitioning to political editor Charles Croucher.
On the Kyle & Jackie O Show on Friday, the newsreader, who is 59 years old, disclosed that he has been frequently using comforting lozenges as his on-air partner since resuming work in February following a surgical procedure on his throat.
Peter shared, “Earlier this year, I underwent a surgical procedure due to a large growth, or polyp, on one of my vocal cords.
‘So I always have a little packet of Throaties on the little table next to the seat.’
Peter admitted that the gaffe was partly the result of misreading the bulletin’s run sheet.
In Peter’s own words, he admitted that it appeared as if finance editor Chris Kohler was tossing a pass out of bounds, but in reality, he had misunderstood the play’s instructions, forcing him to switch to Charles Croucher instead.
In my mind, I decided to place it towards the rear molar, assuming it would fit perfectly, and surprisingly, it did, albeit not entirely.
Following Peter’s embarrassment from the slip-up, Jackie ‘O’ Henderson shared her perspective on the matter.
She remarked, “The candy looked like it had been reduced to a very thin wafer – there wasn’t much of it left at that point.
Peter then revealed he was unaware that the lozenge was visible on camera.
‘You could see it, could you? I haven’t even looked back,’ the newsreader admitted.

When Kyle Sandilands enquired about the senior management’s opinion regarding the mistake, the newsreader replied that they were comfortable with it.
‘The boss just said to me, “you’re human, Peter. That’s what we love about you”,’ he said.
During the introduction of a segment led by their political editor, the long-time Channel Nine employee unintentionally expelled a piece of candy from his mouth.
In a friendly greeting, Peter welcomes Charles Croucher, who serves as the political editor for Channel Nine, joining him from Canberra. “Good evening, Charles,” Peter says.
After initially apologizing, he smoothly handled the situation without any stumbles, and it seemed like he deftly caught the candy in his hand while still focusing on the news report.
Previously this year, Peter, marking his 35-year anniversary with the Nine network on April 5, was temporarily removed from broadcast due to an urgent operation on his vocal cords. Doctors found a polyp during examination.
During his vacation, he found that his voice had developed a hoarse and gravelly quality, leading him to schedule an appointment with his general practitioner.
He got referred to an ENT specialist (ear, nose, and throat), who promptly scheduled a surgery to take out the polyp.

As an absolutely smitten fan, I shared with News Corp that they carefully place a camera within my nasal passage and guide it towards my vocal cords. On the screen before me, I marveled at the sight of my very own vocal cords.
‘And I saw this. It was like a big blister, a lump just hanging off the cord.
He expressed that the experience had left him extremely frightened, primarily due to the fact that the operation temporarily silenced him for an entire week.
‘I must admit, it scared the living daylights out of me,’ he said.
Three days after the procedure, I underwent surgery and they removed it using a laser. I stayed at the hospital for a single day following the operation, and then returned home. After that, I was required to remain silent for more than a week.
He added that being unable to talk required quite the adjustment.
‘It was interesting being mute,’ he said.
If I were to go get the milk, I’d compose an email to remind myself that I’d need to share it with someone.
The broadcasting veteran added he had been seeing a speech pathologist as part of his recovery.
