Peter Kay reveals he turned down Netflix’s request for the rights to Phoenix Nights because they wanted to put a trigger warning on it

Peter Kay refused to license his show, Phoenix Nights, to Netflix because they wanted to add a trigger warning to it.

The 52-year-old comedian developed the series based on a popular episode from his earlier show, That Peter Kay Thing, and also starred in it alongside Paddy McGuinness.

The show was very popular when it aired, but it’s been difficult for fans to rewatch episodes in recent years.

Peter recently turned down a request from Netflix to add his show to their streaming service. The reason? Netflix wanted him to include a trigger warning at the beginning, which he refused to do, and he doesn’t anticipate that changing anytime soon.

He explained on Friday’s Capital Breakfast show with Jordan North, Chris Stark, and Sian Welby that the show’s content wouldn’t be considered acceptable by today’s standards.

Peter revealed the streaming service sent him an air fryer as a ‘Christmas gift,’ but he suspects it was a tactic to get him to agree to their terms.

He explained that Netflix gave him an air fryer as a gift. They contacted him last year about adding his show, Phoenix Nights, to their streaming service, and asked if they could license some of his programs.

They sent me a lot of documents, but looking back, some of the language used isn’t really appropriate by today’s standards. It’s like those disclaimers you see now saying something was created in a different time and reflects the views of that era – that kind of thing.

Peter explained that he’d told them he didn’t want a warning before something happened, and had simply said he’d take his chances. Despite this, they ended up sending him an air fryer.

‘I think that was trying to sweeten me.’

He went on to explain that someone from Netflix, Jon Mountague, had asked him if he wanted anything for Christmas. He jokingly replied that he’d like one of their discounted Fire Sticks.

So, my Netflix air fryer finally showed up. It turned out to be a Philips model, not a Ninja like I expected, but I was still happy to receive it.

I recommend getting the Ninja Sian model if you’re going to buy one. It was covered in Netflix stickers, which I found amusing.

‘It broke. It broke last year.’

Cat Deeley was surprised on Thursday when Peter challenged her about something she often does during interviews, all while they were live on This Morning – and viewers loved the moment!

The presenter, who works with Ben Shephard on ITV’s daytime show, chatted with the comedian about his ‘Better Late Than Never’ tour.

Peter explained to Cat and Ben why he chose to donate all of his tour earnings to various cancer charities.

He shared the names of all twelve charities that will receive funds from the tour, which began in 2022 and has been so successful it’s been extended with additional dates.

The list of charities included organizations supporting those affected by various cancers, such as Teenage Cancer Trust, Kidney Cancer UK, Blood Cancer UK, Bowel Cancer UK, and Prostate Cancer UK.

I was completely cracking up watching the comedian! He was reading off a list of charities, trying to remember all the names, and he noticed Cat was just saying ‘yes’ after every single one. He couldn’t help but laugh in her direction – it was hilarious! She was clearly just agreeing with everything he said, and it was such a funny moment.

You know, life on the road has been pretty incredible lately! I’ve actually been adding extra shows to the tour, and I’m so thrilled to be directing all the proceeds to charity. I’m partnering with twelve amazing organizations, including Children with Cancer UK, the Teenage Cancer Trust, Kidney Cancer UK, Blood Cancer UK, and Bowel Cancer… It feels fantastic to use this platform to give back and support such important causes.

‘I’m not laughing at bowel cancer, it’s because she keeps saying, “yeah”.’

Cat blushed and started to laugh, hiding her face as Ben explained, ‘It’s called active listening – my wife does it and it really annoys me!’

Looking at the camera, Peter playfully asked if anyone had problems with something and wanted to call and complain, before going on to name the charities they were supporting.
