When Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings films first came out in theaters in the early 2000s, the trilogy lasted for over nine hours. The Extended Editions later added even more footage, bringing the total runtime to over eleven hours.
Even though Peter Jackson gave us a very long version of the Middle Earth films, people have been talking for years about an even longer cut, sometimes called the ‘Mithril Cut’.
The director recently confirmed whether a longer version of the film, sometimes called the ‘Extended-Extended Edition,’ actually exists. He shared this information with Empire magazine as part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of The Lord of The Rings.

Jackson admitted there are some extra scenes, but he doesn’t think a much longer version of the film would be satisfying.
It would just be a slightly longer version, adding a few seconds in places, and it wouldn’t really be worth the effort.

Philippa Boyens, who co-wrote the films’ scripts, added: “There’s not a lot. There really isn’t.”
Although Peter Jackson has likely ruled out an extended version of the film, he might eventually create a documentary using the footage that wasn’t included.
The footage includes extra takes, funny mistakes, and a closer look at how the films were made, explained Jackson.

“But to this day, I haven’t persuaded [the studio], because obviously it’s a big undertaking.”
A new Lord of the Rings movie, The Hunt for Gollum, is in the works. Andy Serkis will not only reprise his famous role as Gollum, but he’s also directing the film.
Fans were anticipating the movie’s release later this year, but director Andy Serkis announced in February that it’s been delayed and will now come out in December 2027.
The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will be released in December 2027.
