Peter Dinklage doesn't know if his well-reviewed Toxic Avenger remake will ever be released

As a gamer with a heart for cinema, I’ve seen my fair share of oddball productions that have unexpectedly soared to greatness. The Toxic Avenger remake, starring the brilliant Peter Dinklage, seems to be one such gem waiting to shine.

It was mentioned some time ago that Peter Dinklage, famously known for his role in “Game of Thrones”, would be starring in a modern adaptation of the 1984 cult classic “The Toxic Avenger”. This film, produced by Troma Entertainment, is recognized for its low-budget gross-out horror/superhero genre. In this remake, Dinklage portrays a janitor who accidentally falls into a toxic waste, gains superpowers, and seeks vengeance against the ’80s-style tormentors who once bullied him. The teaser trailer for this project was released approximately a year ago, and it appears to be quite entertaining.

The film had its premiere at Fantastic Fest with outstanding critic reviews, amassing 25 positive ones on Rotten Tomatoes so far, with an impressive 92% approval rating. Furthermore, it boasts some notable celebrities like Peter Dinklage, Kevin Bacon, and Elijah Wood in the cast. However, despite this promising start, there’s been no official trailer released or news about a premiere date yet.

Dinklage said he’s not involved with it, but he hopes it gets released because it was popular at Fantastic Fest in Austin and Macon Blair, the writer/director, is amazing. He’s one of my favorite people and artists, so I hope it gets a chance to shine under the spotlight.

Based on reports from The A.V. Club, there’s been talk in the film industry that the movie might not do well. “A positive reception might have brightened its outlook somewhat,” an unnamed producer reportedly said to World of Reel last month. “However, it seems to lack potential. To be frank, I wouldn’t be shocked if it ended up on Tubi a few years down the line.” It’s worth noting that a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes indicates very good reviews, but feel free to disregard my comment.

On Twitter, someone proposed that the distributors deemed it too risky to sell it, hence no one has taken it up. Film producer Adam Masnyk, who works in movie product licensing, confirmed this information by retweeting and adding that this is indeed accurate – this was the official explanation he received regarding the matter.

It’s always a little disappointing to hear this kind of inside baseball talk and realize that the movie business is about business first. I don’t know if it’s smart business. The whole idea of studios opting not to distribute a film because it’s a bit unorthodox discounts the possibility that unorthodox is what people are looking for, and that they could have on their hands the next big thing people didn’t know they wanted until they see it. And while I don’t know the budget, I guarantee this cost far less than the average big tentpole action movie, so why not pitch it into a few theaters and see what happens?

I understand it’s not as simple as you might think, but here’s my take on the matter. Fingers crossed, we may find out about a definitive launch date in the near or distant future.
