Peter Capaldi’s London-set crime thriller confirms return for season 2

As a long-time fan of British television and a connoisseur of gritty police dramas, I can confidently say that Peter Capaldi’s return in “Criminal Record” season 2 on Apple TV+ is nothing short of thrilling! Having followed his illustrious career since his days as the cantankerous Malcolm Tucker, it’s a joy to see him take on the role of the seasoned Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty.

Peter Capaldi’s thriller series Criminal Record is officially returning for season 2 on Apple TV+.

The series, located in London, showcases the Doctor Who actor portraying the experienced Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Hegarty. His character butts heads with co-lead Detective Sergeant June Lenker, who is played by Cush Jumbo from The Good Wife.

In the second season, we follow Lenker as she becomes the primary investigator for a case involving a political rally that was disrupted by far-right counterprotestors. Tragically, a young man loses his life during this incident, causing a remorseful Lenker to believe that her ex-work partner, Hegarty, and his police intelligence could be instrumental in seeking justice. However, teaming up with Hegarty may demand a significant cost.

In the initial series, the two investigators encounter each other after a clandestine tip-off about an ancient cold case reaches the authorities. It transpires that Lenker uncovers evidence implicating Hegarty in the wrongful incarceration of an innocent individual.

1. The disclosure creates a rift in their partnership, causing tension in their work dynamics. At the same time, Lenker encounters subtle acts of prejudice from fellow officers stemming from a mix of racial, gender, and age-based biases.

As a former detective with years of experience under my belt, I’ve seen it all – from petty crimes to heinous acts that left me questioning humanity itself. But when I saw the star-studded cast of “Criminal Record,” I felt a spark of excitement ignite within me. With actress ZoĆ« Wanamaker, who has graced the screens in shows like “Shadow and Bone” and “Downton Abbey,” joining forces with Stephen Campbell Moore, known for his roles in period dramas such as “Downton Abbey” and “It’s a Sin,” I felt confident that this series would offer a fresh perspective on the criminal underworld. And let’s not forget Shaun Dooley, whose impressive work in “It’s a Sin” showcased his ability to deliver powerful performances, and Charlie Creed-Miles, who has proven himself as a versatile actor through his roles in “Giri/Haji.” With such a talented ensemble, I have high expectations for this series and am eager to see how they bring their characters to life on screen.

Completing the ensemble with their performances in secondary roles are Dionne Brown, Rasaq Kukoyi, Maisie Ayres, Aysha Kala, Cathy Tyson, and Tom Moutchi.

The inaugural season of Criminal Record, consisting of eight episodes, received a five-star evaluation from Digital Spy, commending the show for portraying the complexities and challenging nature of work within the Metropolitan Police Force, set against a fundamentally flawed system.

You can currently stream the first season of “Criminal Record” on Apple TV+. The second season will be released at a future time.
