Peter Capaldi says he’ll never return to Doctor Who, but is still a “huge fan”
As a long-time follower of the Doctor Who saga and someone who has witnessed the transformative journeys of several Time Lords, I find myself in a peculiar position when it comes to Peter Capaldi‘s potential return as the Twelfth Doctor. Given his extensive history within the Whoniverse, spanning from his early days as Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii” to his gripping portrayal of John Frobisher in Torchwood: Children of Earth, Capaldi’s absence from recent iterations has left a noticeable void.
Peter Capaldi played the 12th Doctor in 39 episodes of “Doctor Who” from 2013 to 2017. His tenure was diverse, but fans recall his time fondly. Unlike his predecessors David Tennant and Matt Smith, Capaldi has not returned for a guest appearance since departing, and he shows no signs of wanting to do so.
Capaldi, unlike other Doctors, boasts an impressive resume of portraying various characters across the Whoniverse. As far back as 2008, he appeared as Roman merchant Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii,” sharing screen time with David Tennant’s Doctor. A year after that, he played a significant role as John Frobisher in the spinoff series “Torchwood: Children of Earth.
Fans eagerly anticipate that Peter Capaldi might reprise his role as the Doctor in Doctor Who at some point, considering his affinity for the series. In the world of Doctor Who, anything can happen. For instance, David Tennant returned to play the fourteenth version of the Time Lord in 2022 for a set of fresh episodes. The writers could effortlessly incorporate Capaldi’s character into future stories if they chose to do so. However, it seems that Capaldi himself isn’t keen on reprising his role, which presents a significant challenge.
As a devoted admirer of “Doctor Who”, I find myself at a crossroads. It’s not a matter of disaffection, but rather a realization that sometimes, even the most cherished ventures require a break. I can scarcely envision a scenario where I could rejoin its ranks, possessing the necessary clout to shape its future course.
In the New Who era, Capaldi isn’t alone among those who haven’t repeated their role as The Doctor. Christopher Eccleston, who initiated the revival of Doctor Who in 2005, hasn’t come back and shows no signs of wanting to be part of the show again. Similarly, Jodie Whittaker, the 13th Doctor, hasn’t made a reappearance yet; given that she was just recently cast as The Doctor.
On Christmas Day, the beloved series “Doctor Who” airs a special episode entitled “Joy to the World.” In the year 2025, Ncuti Gatwa’s character, the Fifteenth Doctor, will make his return for another season.
