Peter Andre Faces Backlash Over Blackface Accusations in New Jamaican Gangster Film

In recent discussions, Peter Andre has been criticized for adopting a stereotypical depiction of a Jamaican character, which some people consider to be a form of contemporary blackface, in a newly released movie that is perceived as highly disrespectful.

52-year-old singer known for “The Mysterious Girl,” takes on the main role of Gary Buckle in the upcoming crime-comedy titled “Jafaican.” The film is expected to be released towards the end of this year.

In the movie, Gary has been assigned the challenge of learning a Caribbean accent and understanding the culture so he can convincingly portray a Jamaican criminal mastermind and execute a heist to cover his grandmother’s medical expenses.

As a devoted admirer, I found myself at the receiving end of significant criticism when the trailer of my latest project was unveiled. In this role, I sport a dreadlock wig and strive to deliver lines in patois.

Currently, it has come to light that a filmmaker from the Caribbean has contacted the Gold Coast Film Festival (GCFF), who are responsible for the film’s premiere, to lodge an official grievance concerning the movie.

On the other hand, it’s reported that GCFF argued in favor of the film by referencing Peter’s popular 1995 track, “Mysterious Girl,” claiming its musical style was heavily influenced by reggae.

The criticism alleges that Peter’s characterization in the movie was a regrettable instance of contemporary blackface, disguised as humor but actually offensive cultural mimicry.

According to the source, the critic (whose identity has not been revealed) allegedly labeled the movie as a contemporary minstrel show, a highly xenophobic caricature of Caribbean culture. The portrayal of Rasta personality, including the use of dreadlocks, is considered extremely disrespectful and inappropriate.

They added that reducing the Rasta culture to a ‘comedic prop’ was in fact a ‘grotesque insult’. 

According to reports, the GCFF stated that Peter Andre has had a lengthy partnership in music with Jamaican artists… And in a movie, he shares the screen with a well-known Caribbean musician named Sizzla.

‘The film is set out to showcase Jamaican culture not to mock it.’

TopMob has contacted GCFF and Peter’s representatives for comment.  

Peter promoted the film on X/Twitter last week but deleted the post after fan  backlash.

One observer wondered if the removal of Peter Andre’s tweet implies that the project ‘Jafaican’ might be canceled, since they inquired: ‘Has Peter Andre taken down his post, could it be that the collaboration with Jafaican is no longer happening?’

Despite the initial trailers receiving some negative feedback, other enthusiastic fans expressed their excitement in anticipation of the film’s release, which led to a more positive overall reaction.

Over the weekend, Peter unveiled the official trailer of JAFAICAN on his Instagram, proclaiming: “Here it is – the OFFICIAL trailer for JAFAICAN is now available! Look out for its release in cinemas shortly.

He announced that the first showing of the movie will take place at the Gold Coast Film Festival on May 9, and hinted that details about its UK premiere are imminent.

Enthusiastic spectators exclaimed: “Peter, you look fantastic! Can’t wait to witness this incredible event!” or “Absolutely thrilled!!! Cannot wait for this, @peterandre!

Meanwhile his son Junior added: ‘Been waiting too long for this!!! Can’t wait!!’ 

The contentious movie was recently released, about a month following when Peter criticized Disney’s modern version of Snow White for allegedly causing job losses by replacing real dwarf actors with computer-generated imagery (CGI), instead.

In his latest article for the magazine, he vigorously argues against modernizing classic films, stating, “It’s crucial to preserve these films in their original form.

In the year 2023, the release of the movie faced a postponement due to a comprehensive makeover following unfavorable reviews regarding the presence of seven non-dwarf magical beings. Consequently, these entities were substituted using Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), with the seven dwarves taking their places instead.

Peter stated: “There’s been some debate surrounding Disney’s modern adaptation of Snow White, particularly due to their decision to use CGI for magical beings rather than the traditional seven dwarves.

Keep in mind that the initial tales and movies were products of their era, and indeed, certain aspects might feel outdated or unsettling to modern viewers.

As a devoted cinephile, I firmly believe in preserving the authenticity of timeless cinematic masterpieces. Innovation should thrive in contemporary productions, but reimagining classic films or replacing talented actors with computer-generated imagery isn’t the answer to our creative cravings. Let’s continue celebrating and cherishing the artistry that these iconic films embody.
