Emily MacDonagh, Peter Andre’s wife, shared that they pay their children 50p for completing household chores.
A doctor who admits to being frugal gives her two children, 12-year-old Amelia (Millie) and 8-year-old Theo, a weekly allowance of £1 each.
Emily, age 34, and mother to one-year-old Arabella with her partner Peter, 53, explained that if her children want anything beyond what they already have, they’ll need to earn it themselves.
Hey everyone! I recently shared a little peek into our lives, and a lot of you noticed my daughter, Millie, helping out around the house. She’s been earning some extra spending money by tackling a few chores for Pete and me, and it’s been a really great experience.
The video received a lot of helpful feedback! I asked viewers about their approaches to raising kids – things like allowances and chores – and got some fantastic answers. I decided to create another video to explore those ideas further and get everyone’s opinions.
As a parent, I really believe in teaching my kids about money early on. So, we’ve set them up with their own bank accounts and little cards to use. Pete and I each give them £1 a week – it’s not a huge amount, but it’s enough for them to start understanding how saving and spending works, and they can manage it themselves.
‘And then any extra money they want to have they get through chores.
They might occasionally help with chores, like unloading the dishwasher. I admit I’m a little cheap, though – I’d only pay 50p for someone to do that!
I always encourage my kids to earn a little pocket money by helping around the house. Simple things like making their bed get them 50p, and putting their clothes away is usually another 50p. If they tackle bigger jobs that take a bit more effort and time, I give them around £1.
Emily believes children should contribute to household chores simply as a part of the family, recalling that she wasn’t paid for helping out when she was a child.
She was conflicted about whether to teach her children that helping parents shouldn’t always be about receiving payment, while also wanting to reward their efforts.
‘And they love having that bit of spending money, you know, when they go to the shops.
I also believe in teaching my kids the value of money. I don’t give them large allowances, and I want them to feel a sense of accomplishment when they buy something with their own money – even small purchases of a couple of pounds. It helps them understand the effort it takes to earn money.
That’s just my perspective, but I worry I might be being a little unfair or ungenerous. Please tell me what you think, too.
Most of Emily’s Instagram followers supported her, with many sharing that they either already do the same thing with their own kids or wish they had thought of it themselves.
Someone commented that it’s not a harsh lesson, but rather a good way to teach children the value of money, and that they do the same thing with their own children.
People also shared encouragement, saying things like, ‘You’ll be appreciated for sticking to your principles, I promise!’ and ‘You’re doing a great job with your parenting – keep it up!’
‘I so wished that I would have done that with my kids. You are a great mum.’
This follows Princess Andre, Peter Andre’s daughter, sharing that her father’s relationship with Emily has made her believe in true love. She previously felt cautious about romance after seeing her mother experience several failed relationships.
Okay, so everyone’s talking about my mom, Katie, and her incredibly fast-moving relationship! She recently got married to Lee Andrews in Dubai, and honestly, it all happened so quickly – they’d only known each other for a few days! It’s been a bit of a whirlwind, and I’m finally speaking out about it. It’s definitely been a lot to process, seeing things move so fast, but I’m trying to stay positive and support her.
Princess hadn’t previously commented on Katie’s fourth wedding, but reports say she was shocked and worried when the news came out, especially after several scandalous stories surfaced about Katie’s husband, Lee, and his past.
The teen recently shared in an interview that she hasn’t met her new stepfather yet. However, she expressed that as long as her mother is happy with him, she’s okay with it, even though she jokingly described her mom as ‘crazy’.
In the latest season of her reality show, The Princess Diaries, the hopeful model shared that she’s always felt comfortable telling her parents if she didn’t trust someone in their inner circle.
Princess shared openly that watching Katie’s complicated romantic history – with four marriages and nine engagements – has made her cautious about her own relationships.
She shared that she’s personally witnessed the pain of heartbreak, specifically citing her own mother as an example, as reported by The Sun.
She’s been hurt by a lot of people, and witnessing that throughout her life has really shown me what some people are capable of.
Although her mother’s experiences have made her cautious about dating, she finds comfort in watching her father’s happy relationship with Emily MacDonagh, who is also the mother of his three children: Millie, 12, Theo, 9, and one-year-old Arabella. It gives her hope for finding something similar.
That experience made me cautious, but seeing my dad and Emily together reminds me that real love is possible.
Princess explained she didn’t want Katie’s experiences to make her assume the worst about others. However, she assured everyone she would still be honest with her parents and let them know if she didn’t like someone.
She explained that constantly worrying about being taken advantage of is no way to live. While it’s important to be cautious, you shouldn’t focus only on the potential downsides.
I’m pretty perceptive, even about people my parents know. I’m comfortable telling them if I have a bad feeling about someone, or if I don’t trust them around my mum and dad.
