Pete Wicks reveals he received death threats daily and had people ‘spit at him in the street’ after he cheated on ex girlfriend Megan McKenna as he opens up on their explosive breakup

Pete Wicks openly shared that he faces daily death threats and people have even spat at him on the streets, following the public discovery of his infidelity with ex-girlfriend Megan McKenna back in 2016.

In one of the major plotlines on The Only Way Is Essex, their stormy romance gained significant attention when it came to light that he had been unfaithful to her.

37-year-old television personality, now on friendly terms with Megan (aged 32), opened up about the intense hostility directed at him following their split.

Previously, Megan, who recently became a mother to Landon Henry with her partner Oliver Burke, had expressed that being on TOWIE (The Only Way Is Essex) was one of the most unhappy periods in her life.

After being absent from reality TV for quite some time, Pete shared with Paul C Brunson on his We Need To Talk podcast: ‘I’ve never encountered something like that before – it was incredibly challenging for me to reflect on it later because during that period I was dealing with a breakup from Megan, and the details were widely known.’

Day after day, I faced deadly threats, encountered individuals who spat at me on the street, and received disturbing videos showing dolls being hanged from trees and set alight.

‘I had a lot at the time, I felt like I was a national hate figure, like public enemy number one.

At that moment, my primary concern was Megan and the loss of her, as well as the distress I caused her. The guilt I felt was overwhelming, utterly unbearable.

However, despite this added burden, I found myself quite disorganized, but there it is. The frustrating aspect is when they say, “If you’re in the spotlight, you invite such situations.”

Though this extra responsibility left me scattered, that’s just how it goes. What irritates me most is when people claim, “If you’re in the public eye, then you welcome such predicaments.

In essence, I choose to open myself up for others’ assessments and opinions, welcoming their perspectives into my life.

As a lifestyle enthusiast, let me share an experience from my recent journey on “Strictly.” Despite some talented contestants being eliminated, I found myself continuing in the competition. It became challenging as people expressed their frustration through unwarranted threats. Frankly, it’s not right for anyone to face death threats, and it starts to feel rather absurd.

He stated: “I want to clarify that I acknowledge my mistake, and I’ve been open about it. However, what transpired was a private matter between Megan and myself.

I didn’t intend to cause her pain, but unfortunately, I did. The response I received, though, left me bewildered, I was taken aback by the attention and benefits that came with it. I was at a loss about how to handle the situation.

I’ve become quite cautious now, my experience has made me apprehensive towards others and more guarded with my personal life. It was then that I recognized the existence of two versions of myself: the private individual who cherishes solitude, and the public figure who is open to all.

Pete finally discussed his feelings for Maura Higgins in the emotional interview.

Pete admitted that his connection with Maura has grown deeper lately, stating, “We’ve been spending a lot more quality time together compared to earlier.

Pete, who began dating Maura in August, mentioned: “Maura and I go way back, around six years. We share a great sense of humor, and her intelligence often goes unnoticed by some.

She’s remarkably quick-witted, and for the past six years, we’ve maintained a friendship that’s spanned across distances. We’ve been supportive of one another throughout this time, serving as companions in various ways. However, our relationship has taken on a new meaning recently.

Our interaction has increased compared to earlier times. I truly believe she’s an exceptional individual. She stood by me during my time on Strictly Come Dancing, just as I supported her while she was in the jungle.

My relationship with her is built on the fact that I admire her greatly, and I wish for her to view me in a positive light as well.

‘Are you great together?’, Paul asked.

Pete quipped, “I can tell where this conversation with Paul is heading, and it’s well executed indeed. The truth is that Maura and I have a history – one that spans quite some time, and we’ve always managed to get along just fine.

We’re spending significantly more time with each other compared to the past, a change you’ve likely noticed since getting to know her better.

It’s really enjoyable when I’m with both myself and Maura. We share numerous commonalities, making her an excellent companion. Indeed, we often spend quality time together.

He stated: “Now, I find myself at a distinct phase in my life, one where the factors that once defined me, such as my relationships or the behind-the-scenes drama, no longer hold the same significance.

‘I appreciate all my past experiences, but now I prefer to keep a more private and vulnerable side of myself. Consequently, I present only one aspect of me, which is why I must safeguard this version. I no longer feel compelled to expose everything to everyone.’
