Person named after Game of Thrones character bemoans being bullied over their name
As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for pop culture, I find myself deeply empathetic towards this anonymous individual named Khaleesi. Growing up, I too have experienced the unique challenges that come with having an unconventional name, one that often draws unwanted attention and misunderstanding.
A person on Reddit, choosing to remain anonymous, has shared a post about the impact of having a name reminiscent of a well-known character from a popular fantasy TV series. The poster doesn’t explicitly mention the character’s name, but it’s evident to most readers who they’re referring to. In their post on the r/TrueOffMyChest subreddit, they express that “Being named after a character from a fantasy TV show has significantly shaped my life.” They were born following the initial season of the series, and their parents chose a name inspired by one of the principal characters, not her actual name, but rather her title instead.
You can probably guess what it is, it’s from a dark fantasy TV show with lots of swords and a big throne.
It’s almost certain that her name is Khaleesi, which is the title for Daenerys Targaryen, the main character from the HBO series Game of Thrones. For quite some time, people have been naming their children after Daenerys, and even actress Emilia Clarke has commented on this trend. Interestingly, some of those kids are now old enough to use Reddit, which is causing a bit of an identity crisis for certain users. “Wow, I feel so old,” one user wrote.
It seems as though being called Khaleesi has presented some difficulties for this individual. In school, she was often bullied and ridiculed because of it. She initially appreciated the uniqueness of the name when she was young. A memory she recalls is a teacher questioning her honesty about her name at around age six, something she didn’t fully grasp at that time. Now, she’s contemplating a name change, but feels hesitant because it somehow feels inappropriate. However, she does recognize the name as her own and acknowledges that her parents were the ones who gave it to her.
Because of my name, I got into horses and horse-riding, emulation I suppose? I am who I am because of it, but the bullying recently is getting to me. Lots of ‘riding’ jokes. I don’t hate my parents or anything but I did feel angry at them today over it.
On more than one occasion, a person by the name of “Khaleesi” has encountered difficulties. Not long ago, there was news about a British girl named Khaleesi who was initially denied a passport due to authorities being uncertain if Warner Bros. Discovery had trademarked that particular name. (It’s worth noting that she ultimately received her passport.)
Choosing pop culture figures as names for your children isn’t unheard of – just think about all the Lukes and Leias after Star Wars debuted! However, “Khaleesi” stands out quite a bit. If you insist on naming your daughter from Game of Thrones, I’d suggest Arya, Margaery, or even Brienne; these names are unique yet normal enough that you can explain their origins if needed. If you have a son, choosing a name like Jon or Robb is an easy way to go since they’re already familiar names from the series.
