Perry Farrell, Dave Navarro exchange wildly differing lawsuits over imploded Jane’s Addiction tour
On Wednesday, members of Jane’s Addiction were exchanging lawsuits as if it was routine, with each party presenting claims related to a physical fight that occurred on stage in 2024. This incident ultimately led to the cancellation of their tour and the disbandment of the reunited group.
Initially, Dave Navarro, Eric Avery, and Stephen Perkins filed a lawsuit against Perry Farrell in the Los Angeles County Superior Court, accusing him of assault, battery, causing emotional distress, breach of contract, among other things. Shortly after, Farrell and his wife, Etty Lau Farrell, counter-sued the trio, making similar accusations but providing a significantly different account of events.

Jane’s Addiction unexpectedly concluded their reunion tour on Monday, following an altercation between bandmates Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro which occurred on stage during a performance on Friday.
According to Farrell’s lawsuit, the history of Jane’s Addiction has been marked by longstanding conflicts among its original members who formed the group’s lineup in 1986, a year after the band was created. These conflicts are evident in both complaints, which were examined by The Times.
The lawsuit, with Navarro as the primary plaintiff, alleges that Farrell was having difficulties during the tour. It claims he frequently performed under the influence, and on multiple occasions, he was excessively intoxicated on stage. Notably, in Boston, September 2024, he is said to have brutally attacked the guitarist during a performance. Moreover, it continues, the assault didn’t stop there; Farrell reportedly continued his violent outburst with a series of unprovoked punches backstage.
According to the complaint, the unexpected and violent incident, widely watched by countless individuals across the globe, led to an immediate end of the show and ultimately the whole tour.
In his lawsuit, Farrell alleges that other band members subjected him to years of bullying and attempts to undercut him by excessively amplifying their instruments, making it necessary for him to increase the volume on his ear monitors to potentially harmful levels just to hear himself. According to the lawsuit, during the tour, the trio decided to abandon Jane’s Addiction’s long-standing success in favor of this harassment strategy.

Perry Farrell, a member of Jane’s Addiction, is undergoing medical care at the present time, allowing him to take a pause for introspection and recovery following the physical altercation he had with Dave Navarro on stage last week.
In Boston, according to the singer’s lawsuit, Navarro’s excessively loud playing during their performance was causing distress for Farrell once again, and he was being bullied. Despite repeated pleas from Farrell to lower the volume, Navarro persisted. During the song ‘Ocean Size,’ this deafening sound became unbearable and potentially hazardous for Farrell. In response, Farrell gave a body-check to Navarro as a way of signaling him to stop playing so loudly, but he did not resort to throwing punches.
In a scuffle caused by a physical altercation, Navarro and Farrell found themselves engaged in a pushing contest until an on-stage guitar technician intervened, according to court documents. This brief pause enabled Avery to grab Farrell in a headlock and repeatedly punch him in the kidneys and abdomen, with Farrell being unable to retaliate due to the hold, as outlined in his complaint.
Navarro was depicted as being hostile towards Farrell and his spouse backstage, and in the record, he was cited as saying, “I’ll never collaborate with you again.
A few days after the incident, Navarro, Avery, and Perkins expressed in a statement shared on Navarro’s social media platform that due to Perry Farrell’s persistent behavioral issues and mental health struggles, they felt compelled to halt the ongoing US tour. Their primary concern being Farrell’s personal well-being and safety, as well as their own, they were left with no other option. They expressed hope that he will seek help for his condition.

Dave Navarro, the guitarist from Jane’s Addiction, who was involved in a conflict with singer Perry Farrell that resulted in the cancellation of the band’s remaining U.S. tour, reflected thoughtfully on their turmoil.
In a twist, Farrell’s legal action alleges that the given statement is slanderous, yet it’s important to note that he isn’t pursuing charges related to defamation or libel. Instead, he accuses the other three band members of making the unilateral decision to halt the tour without his involvement.
It’s surprising to note that along with attempting to control the media narrative following the unfortunate incidents of September 13, 2024, the Defendants also spread false, malicious, and defamatory remarks about Perry Farrell. This was not done in good faith but rather as a deceitful strategy to obtain insurance coverage for the fallout from their unwise and illegal cancellation of the tour,” claims Farrell’s lawsuit.
In simpler terms, the other three parties claim they had a system where majority decision-making was used for organizing the tour, due to past issues with Farrell making decisions independently. The document states that with quick and decisive actions, Farrell single-handedly harmed the name, reputation, trademark, and overall success of the Band, which others had worked hard to build.
In an ironic twist, it was Perry who successfully persuaded the original band members to reunite for the tour, as stated in my lawsuit. Interestingly, even I, Navarro, agreed to join despite battling long-term complications from COVID-19. Simultaneously, I was receiving a monthly disability insurance payout of $25,000, which could have continued for an extended period. However, to bring the band back together and embark on this tour, I chose to forego these benefits.

Entertainment & Arts
On Tuesday evening at the YouTube Theater, filled to capacity, I, standing as a modern-day blend of Joshua Tree’s hipster and Indiana Jones, sipped red wine straight from the bottle as I took in the sea of faces before me – Jane’s Addiction’s lead singer, Perry Farrell.
The statement indicates that Perry was the one who failed to meet the expected performance standards, according to the complaint. It alleges that Perry had difficulties each night, showing signs of intoxication, forgetting lyrics, losing his way in familiar songs, and murmuring unclear rants as he drank from a wine bottle on stage. While the band’s performance was generally praised by the music media, Perry’s performance was heavily criticized, being described as “widely panned.
Attorney Christopher Frost, speaking to The Times on behalf of Navarro and others, suggests that if anyone has doubts about what to believe, they can rely on the video we all watched, Etty Farrell’s contemporary Instagram posts, or Perry’s own apology to his bandmates. Specifically, they can trust Farrell’s posts stating that Perry was the aggressor and had been mentally unstable for a while. They can also believe Perry when he apologized for his actions during the show. However, Frost asserts that Perry’s complaint, which details events backstage after the September 13 show, is a distorted version of history and will not hold up.
Representatives for Farrell did not respond to The Times’ request for comment.
Both lawsuits seek jury trials with damages to be determined.
