Perry Bamonte dead at 65: The Cure guitarist suffered mystery illness over Christmas

The Cure announced Friday that Perry Bamonte, their guitarist and keyboardist for many years, has passed away.

The band announced on their website that Bamonte died at home after a brief illness over the Christmas holiday.

The post described him as a quiet, driven, and insightful person with a consistent creative energy, emphasizing his essential role in the band’s history.

Bamonte first started working with The Cure in 1984 as a roadie. He supported frontman Robert Smith as a personal assistant and also maintained the band’s guitars.

After Roger O’Donnell left the band in 1990, Bamonte joined and began playing both keyboard and guitar regularly.

Despite firing Bamonte from the band in 2005, Smith and Bamonte stayed friendly, and Bamonte rejoined The Cure for their 2022 tour.

In 2019, he and the rest of the band were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
