Emma Webster’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong, titled “Vapors“, takes place at Perrotin Hong Kong. This collection consists of 11 dreamy landscape paintings that she created during the wildfires in Los Angeles last January. Using misty shades and delicate brushstrokes, her work delves into themes of impending disaster and its aftermath. The combination of plein-air landscapes, still life, and virtual reality creates a unique artistic style. The title of the exhibition is inspired by the ephemeral quality of vapor, representing the fleeting aspects of change and the intersection between internal and external realities.
Webster’s artistic approach blends conventional techniques with modern technology, marrying sculpture concepts, virtual reality, and digital imaging. The journey starts by forming figurines out of wax and plaster, which are then scanned and integrated into digital landscapes to build complex arrangements. With the help of tools such as Oculus and Blender, Webster transfers these virtual creations onto canvases, prompting viewers to ponder the hazy divide between what is real and what is imagined.
In her artwork, Webster frequently uses birds as symbolic characters, posed in unusual positions that suggest feelings of loneliness and dislocation. Pieces such as “Alaska” and “Sparrow” focus on static positions, while “Odette” depicts a fractured swan beneath a dolmen. By blending traditional Romantic-era portraiture with the uncanny depth of 3D imagery, Webster imbues these figures with a mystical quality. Her landscapes, frequently computer-generated, contrast with manipulated bonsai plants derived from scans, enhancing the conflict between natural and artificial environments.
As “Vapors” unfurls, Emma Webster will unveil her grand-scale landscape painting titled “Hunter’s Garden” at the gallery’s exhibition space during Art Basel Hong Kong. The exhibit “Vapors” commences on March 25 and continues until May 17, 2025.
