In an upcoming release, the grand revenge-themed film by director Robert Eggers titled The Northman, is set to premiere on Netflix for viewers in the United Kingdom and Ireland starting from August 28th.
Featuring an impressive ensemble cast that includes Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe, this movie is inspired by the Scandinavian tale of Amleth, a Viking prince on a quest for justice.
With Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Anya Taylor-Joy, Ethan Hawke and Willem Dafoe among its stars, the film follows a Viking prince named Amleth in pursuit of justice, drawing from a Scandinavian legend.
In a bygone era, the heart-wrenching saga of a well-known medieval personality, Amleth, provided the foundation for William Shakespeare’s play, “Hamlet.” This influential work later inspired Disney’s “The Lion King” and numerous other retellings.
In the year 895 AD, I, a young lad, find myself unwillingly bearing witness to the cold-blooded slaying of my esteemed father, King Aurvandill War-Raven (Hawke), and the abduction of my beloved queen mother, Queen Gudrún (Kidman). This treacherous act was masterminded by none other than my uncle, Fjölnir (Claes Bang), in a palace power grab that would forever change the course of my life.
In time, an adult Amleth (Skarsgård), reflecting on a vow he had made earlier, embarks on a mission to avenge himself against Fjölnir and regain his rightful throne.

First appearing in 2022, the film titled “The Northman” has been met with universal praise from critics, boasting a remarkably high rating of 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, a platform that certifies it as “Fresh.
In our critique, we praised the movie highly, referring to it as “outstanding” and a “resounding victory by Robert Eggers.” We also mentioned that the universe crafted in “The Northman” was so captivatingly immersive.

In a similar vein, the Austin Chronicle stated: “Robert Eggers’ film, The Northman, showcases an impressive cinematic accomplishment. However, it’s more than just that – it’s a gruesome, sorrowful, and violent narrative of vengeance that transcends the realm of theoretical study, immersing viewers in its visceral, sensual, emotional, and grandiose nature.
The movie was also highly praised by Total Film, who called it a unique and powerful epic that seamlessly combines intense violence, stellar acting, and surreal visuals within its explosive journey of retribution. It is not to be missed.

Speaking exclusively with Digital Spy, Skarsgård revealed how he prepared for the role of Amleth.
The actor contemplated, “His actions seem predestined.” Just like an arrow gliding through life, his progression seemed inevitable. To grasp him and his voyage, I found it necessary to delve deeper into the realm of mythology.
In the religious beliefs of the Vikings, it was thought that his destiny was predetermined by the Norns. This mindset contrasts greatly with today’s perspectives. I found myself needing to grasp and comprehend this unique viewpoint.
The Northman will land on Netflix in the UK and Ireland on 28 August.
