Percy Jackson Season 2 Just Revealed Tyson’s Parentage Twist

In Season 2, Episode 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Tyson discovers he’s a son of Poseidon, mirroring the book series by Rick Riordan. However, the show adds a new layer to his understanding: Tyson already had some clues about his origins. He tells Percy that while living in New York City, a Sphinx informed him that one parent was a Naiad and the other a god, though he didn’t know which one was which.

Annabeth explains to Percy that Cyclopes are generally the offspring of nature spirits and a specific god, but things don’t always go as planned. It’s important to remember she stresses this point because of her own difficult experiences with Cyclopes and her resulting lack of trust towards them.

It’s not known whether Tyson was aware of his origins. As Annabeth pointed out, he and many Cyclopes are raised without families, essentially growing up on the streets. This seems to be the case for Tyson in the story, as Sally Jackson discovered him living in a homeless shelter.

One source of confusion comes from how the TV show portrays the encounter with the Sphinx, which differs significantly from the books. In the books, Tyson isn’t given information about his parents during the encounter; instead, he’s attacked by the Sphinx, resulting in back scars.

I recently watched Daniel Diemer, who you might recognize as being cast in Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, in a new show. The first episode dropped on Disney+ on December 10th, and new installments are coming out every week, so it’s definitely something to keep an eye on if you’re a fan!

Who Are Tyson’s Real Parents in Percy Jackson Season 2?

After learning from the Sphinx that his mother is a water nymph and his father is a god, Tyson wonders which god it could be. The answer comes in the first episode of Season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, where Poseidon claims him as his son.

In Season 2, Episode 1 of the Disney+ series, a trident appeared above Tyson’s head – the same one that had appeared over Percy’s head earlier in Season 1, Episode 2. This surprised everyone present, including Percy and Tyson themselves.

This discovery means Tyson and Percy are half-brothers, sharing the same divine parent. As a result, Tyson joins Percy in the Poseidon Cabin, becoming his first roommate at camp.

It’s not certain whether Tyson is considered a ‘forbidden child’ like Percy and Thalia, since that term seems to apply only to those with one human and one god parent. The story seems to treat it that way too – Percy and Chiron specifically mention he’s the only child of the Big Three gods (Zeus, Poseidon, and Hades – though Hades won’t be in Season 2) that anyone knows of, even though we already learned who Tyson’s parent is.

As we learn more about “The Great Prophecy” – which was hinted at in this episode and is well-known to readers of the books – the story might become easier to understand. The books suggest that a child born under forbidden circumstances is central to the prophecy.
