Percy Jackson Season 2 Has a Huge Difference From Disney+ Show’s Debut

If you’re a fan of Percy Jackson, who felt let down by the appearance of the first season on Disney+, here’s some fantastic news for you! The second season is set to offer a significant change in the way Percy Jackson is filmed. Instead of relying heavily on green screens and the volume stage, they are now focusing more on practical effects.

How is Percy Jackson Season 2 going to be different than Season 1?

In simpler terms, Season 2 of Percy Jackson continues the storyline from the second book in the series by Rick Riordan, titled The Sea of Monsters. Originally published in 2006, this novel served as the basis for the first season as well. Unlike the initial season’s focus on events within and near the United States, Season 2 expands the adventure by traveling with Percy Jackson and his friends from Camp Half-Blood to various locations across the globe.

During an interview with Entertainment Weekly about the upcoming Percy Jackson series, executive producer Craig Silverstein emphasized that the new season would be distinct from its predecessor. He commented, “Unlike a cross-country journey in Greyhound buses, stopping at diners and iconic landmarks like the St. Louis Arch, they embark on a voyage that takes them off the map, right into the non-existent Sea of Monsters. We had to bring it to life from scratch, making it even more grandiose.

For the majority of Percy Jackson’s first season, filming was done on “The Volume,” a set that uses a video wall and technology from Industrial Light & Magic to create indoor environments virtually. However, since a significant portion of Season 2 happens at sea, Silverstein mentioned that they were aware they wouldn’t rely on it as much. As a result, they opted for more practical effects instead.

In the upcoming season, viewers will encounter renowned landscapes and backdrops from Riordan’s The Sea of Monsters, such as the Princess Andromeda ship transformed into Kronos’ fortress and the dense jungle cave where the massive cyclops Polyphemus resides. These realistic sets, as disclosed by Percy Jackson co-star Aryan Simhadri, add an impressive scale to the entire season, making it appear “much larger” and “more epic.

I, as the actor portraying Satyr Grover Underwood, expressed, “Those elements couldn’t be duplicated in a conventional stage setting. They needed to be genuine and magnificent. It was absolutely mind-blowing to witness them brought to life on screen.

You can stream the initial season of Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ now, and the next season will debut in December 2025. A future third season is currently being developed.
