Rick Riordan has shared that Percy and Annabeth’s relationship will continue to develop in Season 3 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. He explained that the show will heighten the emotional impact of their story, making scenes that were more understated in the books feel more powerful when seen on screen, as fans might say. The writers are deliberately taking their time developing the relationship between the characters. They want to stay true to the original story and aren’t rushing to reveal whether the characters will become more than friends, promising this won’t be answered quickly. They also hinted that Season 3 of Percy Jackson will be even more exciting, saying viewers should ‘wait till you see it’.
Riordan admitted the first season of the show hinted at a romantic connection between Percy and Annabeth a bit more than the books did. However, he explained that at this point in the story, neither character realizes they have feelings for each other, and their confusion fits with where they are in the timeline.
Riordan pointed out that the actors aging affects how we perceive the characters. Seeing them significantly older in later seasons, compared to the first, changes our understanding of their thoughts and feelings.
He explained that Percy and Annabeth are still struggling to cope with everything happening around them. They’re very conflicted and focused on just getting through each moment, and he believes they’re avoiding dealing with the bigger issues because they’re already overwhelmed. As he put it, they feel like they have too much to handle and can’t even begin to think about anything else right now.
Ultimately, Rick Riordan hints that the growing connection between the two characters will continue to be a central and engaging part of the story as it moves forward.
