Be warned, this contains spoilers for season 1 of It: Welcome to Derry! The season finale of It: Welcome to Derry revealed some surprising information and confirmed a fan theory about Richie Tozier. Richie is, of course, one of the original members of the Losers’ Club in Stephen King’s It novel, alongside Bill, Ben, Beverly, Eddie, Mike, and Stan. This same group of friends were also central to the story in Andy Muschietti’s It movies, as they fought against Pennywise’s return.
The HBO series It: Welcome to Derry is a prequel to the It movies, set in 1962. This was the time Pennywise the Dancing Clown returned to terrorize Derry before the events of the first film. The first season explored how Pennywise came to be, while also hinting at the origins of the Losers’ Club we see in the movies.
Will Hanlon and his family played key roles in It: Welcome to Derry, and they were connected to Mike Hanlon, a member of the Losers’ Club. The character of Leroy Hanlon, Will’s father, was established as Mike’s grandfather in both the 2017 It film and Welcome to Derry. Additionally, Teddy Uris, who died early in Welcome to Derry, was revealed to be Stan’s uncle. The series also featured a cameo from Beverly at the end and revealed a significant detail about Richie’s story.
Pennywise Reveals That Marge Is Richie Tozier’s Mom In The It Franchise

Okay, so things got really wild while Marge was searching for Will on the frozen lake. She actually came face-to-face with Pennywise, and he dropped a bombshell connecting the characters in Welcome to Derry to the Losers’ Club from the movies. He was super creepy, showing Marge a ‘missing’ poster… of her future son, Richie Tozier! When she asked about the Tozier name, Pennywise revealed this crazy time travel element – he basically told her that Richie and his friends are the ones who will eventually kill him. It’s a total mind-bender, and it makes you see everything in a whole new light.
As a huge fan of the It story, one of the creepiest things Pennywise ever said to me was about how he didn’t experience time like we do – he was simultaneously in the past, present, and future. And the way he framed his ‘death’ as a birth really stuck with me, especially after that final confrontation on the frozen lake. Knowing what happens later, it’s pretty amazing to realize Marge eventually marries someone named Tozier, and their son goes on to become a key member of the Losers’ Club. It adds a whole new layer to everything!
Marge Naming Her Son Richie Confirms A Major Welcome To Derry Fan Theory

The revelation that Marge was the mother of one of the Losers was significant, and sadly confirmed a long-held fan theory. Before Rich tragically died saving Marge in the Black Spot, many believed she named her son in his honor, hinting they were mother and son. Now, based on both Stephen King’s book and the film adaptations, it’s clear Pennywise wasn’t lying when he told Marge the truth about their connection.
Jason Fuchs, a writer on ‘Welcome to Derry,’ discussed the connection between the characters Richie Tozier and Marge. He suggested that Marge might have subconsciously named her son after Richie, even if she didn’t fully remember their past. Because the people of Derry often lose their memories, Marge may have simply felt drawn to the name without realizing its significance. Regardless of whether she knew the connection, naming her son after Richie highlights how meaningful their relationship was, even though it didn’t last long.
Rich was openly smitten with Marge, and she quickly fell for him too. Although Marge eventually married someone else, many believe Rich was her one true love, a notion strengthened by the fact that she named her son Richie. It feels especially meaningful that Richie played a key role in defeating Pennywise in It: Chapter Two, and that Rich’s spirit had previously given their friends the courage to temporarily defeat him in It: Welcome to Derry.
