Penny Lancaster recalls the startling admission that won her heart during first meeting with ‘open and vulnerable’ Sir Rod Stewart – after dancing for him at a Christmas party

Oh my gosh, you will not believe how Penny Lancaster and Sir Rod Stewart got together! I’ve followed them for years, and it’s honestly the sweetest story. Apparently, their whole romance started with Penny just… admitting something totally unexpected to Rod! I mean, can you imagine? It’s so different from all the drama you usually hear about in showbiz. It’s amazing to think that even after all this time, they’re still one of the strongest couples out there. I’m seriously obsessed with them!

Lancaster, a 27-year-old photographer, first encountered the famous singer at a private Christmas party. The event took place in the basement of the Dorchester Hotel in Mayfair.

However, the TV personality didn’t realize that their first meeting – arranged by a friend – happened during a difficult period for Sir Rod Stewart. He was starting a long separation from his second wife, Kiwi model Rachel Hunter.

On the newest episode of Davina McCall’s Begin Again podcast, Lancaster, 54, shared a story about asking the well-known singer for an autograph for a friend.

I managed to get his autograph, and then he asked, “So, tell me about yourself, what brought you over here?” I responded, “I’m Penny, and I’m a photography student. I was just out having fun with my friends.”

He asked, “Can you dance?” I simply replied, “Well, I do enjoy dancing.” Then he said he was going to come and watch me. So now, I’m thinking, oh, he wants to see me dance.

Describing the strange experience of dancing with Sir Rod, Lancaster shared that she was shocked when he asked her to come closer and revealed something totally out of the blue.

She explained that she headed straight to the dancefloor, while he went directly to the bar in the corner, sat alone, and observed what was happening. She realized he was following her movements with his eyes, and then someone said to her, “Penny, he’s calling you over.”

He bought me a drink, and we started talking… and he said, “Just so you know, tomorrow there will be some stories in the newspapers. He wanted to warn me about that before we continued our conversation.”

My wife and I have decided to separate. While we are getting a divorce, we’ve agreed to spend this Christmas together as a family, for the sake of our children.

Sir Rod and Hunter formally split the year after, but it took another seven years for their divorce to be legally completed in 2006.

I remember thinking, “Wow, that was unexpected.” But he was so honest, open, and even a little vulnerable, so it was clear he was really hurting,” Lancaster recalled.

It wasn’t like the usual experience of a man hitting on you at a nightclub – someone older who’d done this many times before. This was actually my first time being in that kind of situation, really.

It was clear to Lancaster that a temporary alliance – one that would dissolve the next day – was in effect when she found out Hunter had gone with her husband, from whom she was soon to be separated, to the Dorchester.

He mentioned, “The only slightly strange thing is that my wife is also here.” That made me a little uneasy. I thought to myself, “Okay, I should go say hello to my friends; it was nice meeting you.”

He offered, “Could I get your number for my bass player? I can get you a pass to come and take photos at the show. I want to give you a chance to practice your photography, since you’re studying it.”

Lancaster says she accepted his invitation, but they didn’t actually go on their first date for another nine months – after his separation was finalized.

Sir Rod married his second wife, Hunter, who was 24 years younger than him, in 1990. They had two children together – a daughter named Renee and a son named Liam – before separating in 1999.

Lancaster remembered receiving a phone call. As he recounted, the caller said, “Hi, it’s Rod Stewart. I’m back in England. Why don’t we go for dinner? Let’s catch up..”

I thought someone was playing a joke on me. The fun with my friends was coming to an end. Then my mum told me, “don’t answer it for at least 24 hours.” I was surprised and asked “what?” but I decided to follow my mum’s advice, as she’d always been right about everything else.

I returned the call, and it was him – he has a very recognizable voice. He asked if I’d like to have dinner, saying, “Let’s have dinner. Are you available tomorrow night?” Then he offered to pick me up, asking, “I’ll pick you up, will that be alright?” and I just said, “yeah.”

I found myself on a nice date, but it was a bit unusual – I was with another couple. It was kind of a work-related outing, as he wanted to look at my photographs, and his friend was also there.

‘So it’s not an official date, but there’s obviously some igniting of energy going on.’

Lancaster later married Sir Rod in a grand wedding in Italy in 2007. They have since had two sons, Alastair and Aiden, together.
