Penny Lancaster has said she almost ended her relationship with Rod Stewart because he was hesitant about having children. The couple later went through a difficult IVF process before finally starting a family together.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! My absolute idol, the incredible rocker, is 80 years young and has been with his amazing wife for 18 years now! She just revealed something so fascinating – when they first started dating, he was hesitant about having more kids. Can you imagine? He already had six children with four different women! It’s just… so him, you know? A legend with a full life and a big heart. I’m obsessed!
Rod has five children: Sarah Streeter, 60, from his relationship with Susannah Boffey; Kimberly, 45, and Sean, 44, with his ex-wife Alana Stewart; Ruby, 37, with Kelly Emberg; and Renee, 32, with Rachel Hunter.
When asked if she’d be willing to break up with Rod if he didn’t change his mind, Penny replied that she would, and admitted it would have been difficult. However, she explained that they simply took things as they came.
She added that Rod now regrets not agreeing to her wishes earlier, as they both would have liked to have more children.
She shared with Saga Magazine that they had considered adoption five years prior, but ultimately decided against it. Their main concern was the potential age difference between them and a child.
Penny always said she wanted to be a mother, so she was heartbroken when she lost her first pregnancy. After trying for a baby through IVF, she and her husband eventually welcomed two sons, Alastair, now 19, and Aiden, 14.
The former Loose Women panelist spoke about her experience with IVF on BBC Breakfast, and shared how much she appreciated her husband’s support and patience during the treatment.
She explained that she had to give herself injections regularly – one in her stomach and one in her buttocks. She did this everywhere, including backstage at Rod’s concerts, on airplanes, and at home, whenever she needed to.
Rod was incredibly supportive and dedicated. He encouraged me to keep trying, saying, “I’m with you every step of the way – let’s do this!”
Penny acknowledged that even though she and Rod had a difficult time with IVF, there were also some lighter moments. She also noted that Rod maintained a good sense of humor throughout the process.
He frequently mentions his doctor examining his sperm, and once discovered one sperm with two heads and another that appeared to have little feet.
The Special Constable believes we need to talk more freely about fertility, encouraging both women and men to discuss the serious aspects, but also to remember it doesn’t have to be all serious and can still be a positive experience.
Penny, while discussing her new memoir, recalled their first encounter. She explained that it happened at a Christmas party, where a friend challenged her to ask Rod Stewart for an autograph – and she did.
Charlotte Gallagher asked Penny how her parents felt when they found out she was dating Rod.
She explained that people always suspected she preferred older men, but they worried Rod Stewart might present some challenges or difficulties.
Okay, so get this – my dad’s a lawyer, right? A proper City of London lawyer. And when he finally met Rod Stewart, he decided he was going to make a statement – a *leather jacket*! It was so him. But Rod? Rod was amazing. He saw what my dad was doing and was like, ‘No, *I’m* going to dress like a lawyer!’ He turned up in a full pinstripe suit! Honestly, it was the best. They were sizing each other up with their outfits, it was hilarious and perfect.
They initially met by playfully swapping clothes. After that, they hit it off immediately, as did this person with my mother. They likely connected so well because they were from the same generation and were nearly the same age.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE how Rod met Penny! It’s totally hilarious. He’d *just* gotten out of things with Rachel, like, six months before, and he said the only reason he didn’t call Penny right away wasn’t because he wasn’t interested – it was because a friend of his was being SO difficult and wouldn’t give him her number! Can you imagine?! It’s just… perfect. He was clearly smitten, but had to wait for a phone number! It’s the most adorable thing ever!
He jokingly responded to the question of whether he’d wanted to be single, explaining there was a six-month gap between relationships with Rachel and Penny. He blamed this on his bass player, who had Penny’s phone number but refused to share it with him.
He told me I’d basically be wasting time, and he turned out to be right – I had a wonderful six months.
Rod publicly expressed his love for his wife, Penny, saying she possesses all the qualities he desires and that he’s currently experiencing the happiest time of his life.
