Penn Badgley reveals he and wife Domino Kirke nearly split after suffering two devastating miscarriages

Penn Badgley has revealed that he and his wife, Domino Kirke, almost separated after experiencing the emotional toll of two miscarriages.

I was really touched by what the actor shared recently. They opened up about how deeply affected they were by a loss they experienced as a couple, something that happened before their family grew with the arrival of their three wonderful children. It felt so honest and vulnerable.

In a recent interview, Penn explained that he and his wife, Domino, a doula, found it difficult to cope with their experience because it wasn’t something people talked about openly at the time.

He discussed his new book, Crushmore: Essays on Love, Loss, and Coming-of-Age, during an interview on the Totally Booked podcast.

In a recent podcast interview, Penn discussed how common experiences of loss are. He suggested that simply talking about loss might not be enough, but that increasing open conversation about it is a crucial first step.

He clarified that he was talking about miscarriages, explaining that they’re common and incredibly painful – often universally so, though not everyone feels fully able to acknowledge that pain.

Penn recounted a disturbing memory from a difficult period when he and Domino were facing hardships.

Penn explained that this loss was particularly difficult, marking the second they’d experienced together. It felt like a pattern that wouldn’t end, and it put a significant strain on his marriage, nearly leading to a separation, as often happens after such hardships.

We felt incredibly alone because very few people around us understood what we were going through or knew how to help. The memory of seeing our baby on the blurry, black-and-white sonogram screen is still deeply upsetting, and it resurfaces every time we have another ultrasound.

He explained that becoming a parent was a significant turning point in his life. Since he didn’t have any children of his own at the time, and his wife was having her first child, it was a particularly impactful experience for them both.

We almost broke up, but we didn’t let that issue tear us apart. Now, we have three children together.

Penn and Domino are now parents to three sons. Their oldest was born in 2020, and they recently welcomed twin boys earlier this year.

The star is also stepfather to Domino’s son Cassius, 16, from a previous relationship.

Penn playfully said he feels overwhelmed with his many children, making it difficult to think back on the challenging times the family has faced.

He explained that it’s amusing to him because he wrote this piece before his twins arrived, and now he jokingly feels overwhelmed with kids – though he loves them very much.

‘So, it’s harder to get in touch with that feeling of loss because my cup truly runneth over.’

That was a significant moment for us, particularly because I didn’t have any biological children at the time, and my wife was experiencing the birth of our first child.

One of the most challenging times in my life and my wife’s was when we almost separated. Thankfully, we worked through it and didn’t let the relationship fall apart. Now, we have three children together.

I was absolutely heartbroken when I found out Domino shared her story about losing a pregnancy back in 2020. It was when she was expecting their second, and Penn’s first, and it just felt so raw and real. I remember feeling so much empathy for her, and I’ve been following her journey ever since.

She shared on Instagram that being pregnant after experiencing loss is incredibly difficult. After suffering two miscarriages consecutively, she and her partner had almost given up on trying for a baby.

I lost faith in my own physical strength and began to come to terms with my limits. Having worked as a birth attendant, I’ve witnessed countless experiences, both joyful and heartbreaking. It’s emotionally draining to support others through loss, and I need to prioritize my own well-being and process my feelings.
