Penelope Milford dead at 77: Oscar-nominated Coming Home actress passes away in New York

Actress Penelope Milford has died at 77.

The acclaimed actress, known for her Oscar-nominated performance in the 1978 film *Coming Home*, died Tuesday in Saugerties, New York.

Her brother Doug Milford confirmed her death but no cause has been revealed.

She played the role of Vi Munson in the Hal Ashby film, which also featured Jane Fonda, Jon Voight, and Bruce Dern.

The movie takes place in California and tells the story of a woman whose husband is serving as a Marine in Vietnam. She unexpectedly falls in love with a former high school friend who was paralyzed during combat in the war.

Vi was the sister of Bill Munson, played by Robert Carradine. Bill returned home from Vietnam after only two weeks, deeply troubled by his experiences, and is now a patient at a Veterans Administration hospital.

She ultimately lost out on the Oscar to Maggie Smith for her role in California Suite back in 1978.
