Pedro Pascal to film scenes for ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’ later this year
As a dedicated Star Wars fan who has followed Pedro Pascal’s meteoric rise to fame, I couldn’t help but feel a pang of disappointment when I learned that his busy schedule might prevent him from starring in Todd Haynes’s gay love story. But then, upon realizing that this means he’ll be spending more time as Din Djarin, my excitement for the upcoming Mandalorian movie and its release on May 22, 2026, quickly overtook any lingering feelings of wistfulness.
Currently, Pedro Pascal is swamped with commitments as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. Due to his busy work on The Mandalorian & Grogu and the upcoming Fantastic Four, he unfortunately does not have room in his schedule for another film.
Based on reports from The Hollywood Reporter, there have been discussions about Pedro Pascal potentially taking over the role previously held by Joaquin Phoenix in Todd Haynes’ upcoming gay love story. Filming was set to begin shortly, but Phoenix unexpectedly withdrew at the last minute, causing a flurry among the production team. At this point, Pascal is being considered as a potential replacement for Phoenix; however, it might prove challenging to secure his involvement due to his busy schedule for the remainder of the year, according to their sources.
Pedro Pascal’s name has been bandied about, though sources tell THR he’d be an unlikely choice given that Pascal’s schedule is packed until the end of the year with Fantastic Four and The Mandalorian shoots and also because Haynes had already cast Top Gun: Maverick‘s Danny Ramirez as Phoenix’s love interest in the film, which centers on a corrupt L.A. cop in the 1930s who has a torrid affair with a nonwhite male character.
It’s unfortunate that Pedro can’t find time for Haynes’s love story, but fans of The Mandalorian should be thrilled by this news instead. Many media sources, including Bespin Bulletin, interpret this news as a confirmation that Pedro will be on the set of The Mandalorian and Grogu in the coming months. This suggests he’ll not only record lines but also suit up as Din Djarin, making it impossible for him to schedule anything else.

Pedro is currently a month or so into filming Marvel’s Fantastic Four as Reed Richards, and while there were rumors he may have shot “time-sensitive” scenes for The Mandalorian and Grogu, it’s never been confirmed. Those scenes were likely included in the movie’s teaser shown to fans at the D23 Fan Expo on August 9. Nevertheless, with The Mandalorian transitioning to the big screen, Pascal’s involvement in the project was a no-brainer. He stars in major big and small screen roles and movies like Gladiator II, Materialists, Fantastic Four, and The Last of Us Season 2 coming up. Pascal is in high demand, and Star Wars was bound to ensure their current biggest draw is on set as Din Djarin.
Regardless of our prior knowledge, regardless of future events, these were the top three “Wow! Pedro Pascal is The Mandalorian” moments ❤️.

Pedro’s good looks and acting talent have solidified him as a true star, making it foolish for Disney not to maximize his presence in The Mandalorian and Grogu. Although Season 3 was the first season where we didn’t see Din Djarin without his helmet, the movie ought to rectify this by giving fans another chance to see Pedro back in the costume.
The Mandalorian and Grogu premieres May 22, 2026.
