Pedro Pascal is being speculated as a potential replacement for Joaquin Phoenix in an upcoming gay romance movie, following Phoenix’s departure a year ago just before production commenced.
In Todd Haynes’ upcoming film “De Noche,” originally slated to star Danny Ramirez, age 32, and Phoenix, aged 50, as on-screen lovers, there were plans for explicit sexual content. There have been whispers that Ramirez may have expressed unease regarding the intimate scenes.
Currently, at the age of 50, Pascal is reportedly being considered for the main role. According to Deadline, this comes three months after an unforgettable interaction between him and Phoenix over the latter’s unintentional offensive salute during the promotion of their film Eddington at Cannes.
As reported, the production of the film is expected to commence in early next year, specifically in Guadalajara, Mexico. The shooting schedule will be tailored to accommodate Pascal’s busy schedule.
Christine Vachon and Pam Koffler are producing for Killer Films.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for Pedro Pascal for comment and has yet to hear back.

Entire sets had reportedly been built in Guadalajara before Phoenix exited the film.
It’s possible that some members of the crew believed that Phoenix left the project due to the steamy scenes, according to Variety. However, other sources suggest that this isn’t accurate, as Phoenix was actually the one who approached Haynes with the project initially.
In a conversation with Variety in September 2023, Haynes explained that Phoenix initiated the movie’s development using fragments of concepts. He added, ‘Essentially, this was an organic method to shape the script. Moreover, Joaquin was driving it towards riskier, sexually explicit terrain.’
In May, a viral video emerged featuring Pascal (from The Last of Us) preventing Phoenix from waving to passersby. After a brief conversation, they continued their way.
Online users speculated that The Last Of Us actor might unintentionally have mimicked a gesture similar to the Nazi salute during a performance, causing suspicion among them.
In a conversation with the Daily Mail, lipreader NJ Hickling reported that Pascal advised Phoenix to “put on an act of being charming” and then suggested he should “stay calm.
While posing for photos, Pedro playfully warns Joaquin by grabbing his arm and gently pulling it down.
Oh no, please refrain from doing that. Your actions are disrupting the confidence here. Could you try acting casual, like you’re moments away from achieving something impressive, buddy?

Joaquin, always contemplative by nature, briefly pauses before uttering softly, ‘Alright, that’s enough.’
Initially, Joaquin’s response seems to be aimed at Pedro, but upon closer inspection, it appears he’s also conversing with himself. A fleeting moment of self-realization crosses his mind. Subsequently, in a hushed tone, almost as if speaking to no one, he whispers, ‘Gosh, I never realized that.’
People voiced their opinions through different hypotheses regarding the interaction on social platforms, as some expressed thoughts by tweeting and others by commenting on the Instagram video.
One wrote on X, ‘Joaquin was really enjoying that wave until he got told he looked like a Nazi.’
Pedro Pascal grabbing Joaquin Phoenix’s arm right before the unintentional salute left me utterly bewildered,” is one possible paraphrase for your original sentence, maintaining the same meaning but using simpler and more conversational language.
A different Instagram user commented beneath the video: “Ten years ago, it wouldn’t have been possible to confuse a simple wave with a Nazi salute. However, in today’s tense political environment, such misunderstandings are not only possible but, sadly, no longer surprising.
One person wrote on Instagram, ‘He’s making an effort to keep him from being misunderstood, or even intentionally misconstrued, which is just amusing given how people seem to struggle so much these days with doing anything correctly.’
‘Pedro just saved Joaquin’s entire career,’ one joked.
