Pedro Pascal Explains Why He Was “Skeptical” About Playing Reed Richards In The MCU’s Fantastic Four Movie
As a die-hard fan eagerly awaiting Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, I can’t help but share his initial reservations about stepping into the Marvel Cinematic Universe role, as he recently revealed in an interview. However, with less than a month until its release on July 25, 2025, those doubts are quickly fading away amidst a powerful marketing campaign that emphasizes the theme of family and underscores the central role of The Fantastic Four as the world’s primary —and possibly only— protectors.
In a chat with Empire magazine, Pedro Pascal shared that although he didn’t have doubts about the overall project of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he was hesitant about being chosen to play Reed Richards. This was because he wasn’t confident about embodying certain aspects of the character’s portrayal as a renowned astrophysicist and family man in Marvel Comics. In his own words, he expressed that he wasn’t sure if he could convincingly bring to life Reed Richards’ essential traits as they are depicted in the comics.
Initially, I had no doubts about the work itself, but I did question whether I would be able to deliver a compelling performance as an astrophysicist, a father, and a husband.
Subsequently, he made it clear following an unplanned encounter with director Matt Shakman on a New York street as he was considering the part, that…
“I definitely think it was destiny.”
What Pedro Pascal’s Comments Mean For The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Pascal’s Initial Skeptecism May Have Been Unfounded Based On His Previous Roles
Pedro Pascal’s remarks touch on a significant issue within the Marvel Cinematic Universe community, as Reed Richards is one of Marvel Comics’ most adored characters and hence, it’s crucial to get him right in adaptations. The 2005 version of Fantastic Four, though, received mixed reviews. However, the reception towards Ioan Gruffudd playing Reed Richards was generally favorable. So, Pascal’s comments might reflect a common apprehension that often arises when portraying such a beloved Marvel character. Whether his worries prove justified is yet to be determined.
Despite not having played the role yet, Pedro Pascal boasts a wealth of impressive acting credentials and charisma that have earned him respect in the industry. Most recently, he’s demonstrated his knack for playing fatherly figures in both The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, which are key to his character development within Marvel’s First Family. Simultaneously, these roles showcase his versatility as an actor. Crucially, capturing Reed Richards’ dynamic with the rest of the team will be a crucial aspect for Pascal in this upcoming role.
